The Rundown Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman March 17, 2019

Mill Creek has released the Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Action film 'The Rundown' to Blu-ray. Universal first released the film to Blu-ray a decade ago and that studio has since re-released it several times, individually and as part of several bundles. This Mill Creek release removes the supplemental content found on the Universal disc but does carry over identical video and an extremely similar, if not the same, audio presentation.

Beck (Johnson), an imposing bounty hunter, is ready to leave the rough-and-tumble business and open his own cozy 10-15 table restaurant. To get out of the game, he needs a few more dollars and one more job. He's asked to hunt down and return his boss's son, Travis (Seann William Scott, Mr. Woodcock), and earn a cool quarter-million dollars. Beck descends into the Amazon in search of Travis, who himself is in search of a rare artifact known as "Gato del Diablo," or "The Devil's Cat." Beck soon encounters Hatcher (Christopher Walken, Domino), himself after the Gato and working the townsfolk of El Dorado to death in the name of profit. He, too, then, holds an interest in Travis's work and whereabouts. Beck finds Travis easily enough, and the pair soon find themselves on the run from Hatcher and his goons. With the help of local bartender-by-day and rebel-leader-by-night Mariana (Rosario Dawson, Seven Pounds), the search for the Gato and a fight for survival is on -- assuming Beck and Travis don't kill one another in the process.

The Rundown Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Mill Creek's Blu-ray release of The Rundown appears to utilize the exact same transfer found on the Universal disc. Scene and still comparisons reveal no perceptible changes. For a full film review, please see the Universal release review here. The included screenshots are sourced from the Mill Creek disc.

The Rundown Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

Both this Mill Creek release and the Universal disc feature a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack. The Universal disc does read at a slightly higher average bitrate at most any given moment, but the two tracks are very similar, if not identical, when compared with the ear test. Any difference in perceived volume, depth, etc. is negligible. For a full audio review, please click here.

Note that the Mill Creek disc does drop alternate French and Spanish language and subtitle track options found on the Universal release.

The Rundown Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  n/a of 5

Whereas Universal's decade-old disc featured two commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and several featurettes, Mill Creek's Blu-ray has nothing to offer. It does ship with a DVD copy of the film, but a digital code and a slipcover are nowhere to be found.

The Rundown Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

Mill Creek's Blu-ray release of The Rundown is the same as the old Universal disc where it counts, in terms of its A/V quality, both of which are very good. This release does drop the Universal disc's extras and loses a few language options. Given the choice, the Universal disc is obviously the better bet (and it's priced similarly at time of this review's publication). That said, fans only concerned with the movie proper should find no reason to dismiss Mill Creek's offering.
