This time the bumbling French detective Inspector Clouseau is reluctantly called back into service by Chief Inspector Dreyfus when someone swipes the infamous Pink Panther diamond from the museum in Lugash. The prime suspect is the smoothly aristocratic jewel thief Sir Charles Lytton, aka the Phantom.

Kino Lorber's release of The Return of the Pink Panther is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray is Region-Free. However, the Blu-ray is Region-A "locked".
Please note that some of the screencaptures included with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and downscaled to 1080p. Therefore, they do not accurately reflect the quality of the 4K content on the 4K Blu-ray disc.
Screencaptures #1-28 are taken from the Blu-ray.
Screencaptures #31-39 are taken from the 4K Blu-ray.
The release presents an exclusive new 4K restoration, sourced from the original camera negative. In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to view it with Dolby Vision.
I received an early Blu-ray copy of The Return of the Pink Panther and a week ago we posted a review of it. Yesterday, I was able to view the 4K restoration in its entirety in native 4K.
I did not see anything to make me reconsider my take on the 4K restoration. It is very accurate, gorgeous, and enormously satisfying. In native 4K, some of the density fluctuations become more prominent, and on a large screen, it is easier to see even some smaller inconsistencies in sharpness and clarity. However, in darker areas, the Dolby Vision grade helps darker nuances and shadows appear more consistent and attractive than they do in 1080p on the Blu-ray. Color reproduction and balance are outstanding. I liked everything that I saw. All primaries and all supporting nuances are perfectly set, and the overall color temperature of the visuals is outstanding. Unsurprisingly, the entire film has a very convincing, impressive period appearance. In native 4K, the small surface imperfections are also easier to see. I think that this is the only area where some additional cosmetic work could have been done to ensure that the entire film looks immaculate. Still, I am very happy with the quality of the 4K restoration. My score is 4.75/5.00.

There are two standard audio tracks on this Blu-ray release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature. When turned on, they appear inside the image frame.
I chose to stay with the 5.1 track while viewing the 4K restoration in native 4K.
I used the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track because the older Australian release I mentioned elsewhere had only an LPCM 2.0 track. The 5.1 track certainly opens up different sections of the film, where there is material that can be more effective, but dynamic intensity is not altered significantly. I personally would be perfectly fine viewing the entire film with both tracks. All exchanges were clear and easy to follow, and I did not notice any technical anomalies to report.

4K BLU-RAY DISC

A slightly better screenplay and improvisational work from Peter Sellers would have transformed The Return of the Pink Panther into an outstanding film. Some of the slapstick is among the best in the Pink Panther films, but some of it is repetitive as well. While quite different from David Niven, Christopher Plummer was a fantastic new addition, introducing a bit of a James Bond-esque flavor to the action that feels quite refreshing. Kino Lorber's upcoming combo pack and Blu-ray releases of The Pink Panther Returns present a very accurate, gorgeous, and enormously satisfying new 4K restoration, which will remain the definitive presentation of the film. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
