The Quintessential Quintuplets: Season 2 Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 22, 2024

The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 continues the comedy drama. Created by Negi Haruba, The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 brings the fan-favorite characters back for a second season of romantic hijinks and comedic adventures. Released in Japan as The Quintessential Quintuplets , The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 features animation production by Bibury Animation Studio (Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall, The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You).

The series follows in the footsteps of comedies such as Tenchi Muyo. Executive produced by Shin Katō, Takahiro Sasaki (Battle Girls - Time Paradox, Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers), and Yoshio Kaneko (The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter, Tokyo Revengers), The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 provides a winning combination of romance and comedy to entice even the most jaded of anime fans. It’s no wonder The Quintessential Quintuplets has developed a rabid fanbase in Japan and overseas.

Produced by Gouta Aijima (Grand Blue Dreaming, My Roommate is a Cat), Junichiro Tanaka (The Demon Girl Next Door, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU), Kento Yoshida (Land of the Lustrous, Restaurant to Another World), Mitsutoshi Ogura (Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, Waiting in the Summer), Shin Furukawa (Attack on Titan, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord), Takaaki Nakanome (The Demon Girl Next Door, Seven Senses of the Reunion), Tomoki Ueda (Platinum End, The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie), Tomoyuki Ōwada (Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater, The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World), and Yuichi Izumi (Arifureta - From Commonplace to World's Strongest, I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level), The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 offers a continuation of the beloved franchise that won the hearts of series fans. The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 features voice work by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Ayana Taketatsu, Ayane Sakura, Inori Minase, and Kana Hanazawa.

Futaro Uesugi (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) sure has things cut out for him. Not only is Futaro busy with school Academia, Futaro finds himself surrounded by the gorgeous Quintessential Quintuplets: Nino Nakano (Ayana Taketatsu), Yotsuba Nakano (Ayane Sakura), Itsuki Nakano (Inori Minase), and Ichika Nakano (Kana Hanazawa).

The Quintessential girls have different hairstyles and hair colors to differentiate each other. The Quintuplets are always obsessed with Futaro and the sisters will do whatever they can to win his affections. Who can win his heart? Nothing will stand in the way between the Quintuplets and Futaro. Except, perhaps, the unexpected arrival of a past flame that Futaro never expected to see again. What’s a sisterhood to do?

The Quintessential Quintuplets features a compelling cast of characters. It is a series that works so well largely because of the memorable cast. My sister and I had so much fun watching the first season of The Quintessential Quintuplets together and it is nice seeing the series continue on. The characters provide a fun element to the series concept. The character designs by Masato Katsumata (The Dangers in My Heart, The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie) are so well done. There is a lot to appreciate.

The characters on The Quintessential Quintuplets are well differentiated with their designs highlighting the different hair colors in order to gives audiences a chance to have an easier time differentiating between the different characters. For quintuplets, the characters might have been a lot harder to differentiate otherwise so these stylistic elements by the character designer help to add some distinctiveness to the cast of characters – a good idea for the series designs. Well done.

The series animation on The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 is one of the best qualities of the entire production. The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 features art direction by Akihito Ōgiyama (Puzzle & Dragons X, The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie) and chief animation direction by Masato Katsumata (The Dangers in My Heart, Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian), Ryōta Arima (Mayonaka Punch, The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie), Tomoyuki Shitaya (Sagrada Reset, The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess), and Yukie Hiraka (The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie, Prima Doll). The animators did a solid job with the production. The animation team provides quality animation that brings a gorgeous aesthetic to the forefront of the series.

The cinematography by Daisuke Chiba (The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3, The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie) highlights the animation well. The cinematography is bright and colorful. Animation appears vibrant and well- highlighted with the nice cinematographic style. Chiba is a compelling cinematographer and it’s great to see them back for the second season.

The score composed by Hanae Nakamura (My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, The Witch and the Beast) and Miki Sakurai (The Demon Girl Next Door, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! ) continues the saga and its winning combination of romance and comedic fun. The score adds to the production as a backdrop to the comedic mayhem between these girls and their journey.

Written by Keiichirō Ōchi (The Demon Girl Next Door, The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses), The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 continues the fan-favorite romantic-comedy. The heart of the series resides in the characters. The characters carry the series forward. Ochi has fun exploring these lovable and delightful characters.

Directed by Kaori (Yuyushiki, How to keep a mummy), The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 will certainly appeal to series fans hoping to continue the saga. The second season offers more anime romance. The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 might not reinvent the wheel but it provides entertaining characters that fans have come to know and love. Fans of similar anime series such as Tenchi Muyo will delight in the fun.

The Quintessential Quintuplets: Season 2 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high- definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 has received a native high-definition presentation. Colors are vibrant, showcasing the animation and the world of the characters. It is nice to see a native high- definition presentation. The native high-definition animation certainly benefits by being presented as such. Some physical media release feature standard-definition on Blu-ray upscales for anime (but this typically results due to some lower-quality sources being upscaled for the format). The animation has such a vibrant aesthetic. The colors are beautiful. These are essential ingredients to the production and to the presentation.

The Blu-ray format provides superior presentation quality to streaming services. Streaming video services tend to provide lower video bit-rates compared to physical media and the Blu-ray disc format. For home theater enthusiasts wanting the best possible presentation quality achievable, the Blu-ray format is certainly a superior option and there is plenty to appreciate about the encoding quality. Factoring in other variable aspects such as data streams and how good an internet connection is (as some connections can fluctuate due to a myriad of factors such as other family members perhaps using the connection for online video gaming and other data drains) and one can appreciate how superior physical media is to streaming.

The surround sound track expands the soundstage with more envelopment for the soundtrack and sound effects. The Quintessential Quintuplets: Season 2 Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  1.0 of 5

The release includes a well-designed o-card slipcover. The o-card slipcover features unique key art different from the key artwork highlighted underneath the slipcover. Both cover art designs have highlighted the cast of characters in memorable poses. The artwork shines and makes a worthy impression. These artcards may not be available with the second pressing and onward.

The Quintessential Quintuplets: Season 2 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 continues the formula of romantic-comedy hijinks. Fans of the series will absolutely want to continue the journey. The animation is beautiful and the series has a wonderful cast of characters. Fans of Tenchi Muyo and other romantic-entanglement anime series with a vast number of women all falling for one in-over-his-head guy will appreciate the comedic dynamics.

The Blu-ray release provides a high-definition presentation and lossless audio encoding. The first print run of the release also comes with a limited- edition slipcover. The first print of the release also has a selection of character art cards. The art cards make a nice addition to the release. Fans of the series certainly might want to consider a purchase for ownership, the superior presentation quality, and the collectable slipcover and art cards.
