The Purge: 5-Movie Collection Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker March 9, 2026

Written by writer/producer/director James DeMonaco, all five films set in a crime-ridden future return to 4K UHD disc in 'The Purge: 5-Movie Collection 4K' courtesy of Universal. DeMonaco would also serve as the director of three films in the franchise: 'The Purge', 'The Purge: Anarchy', and 'The Purge: Election Year'. The films feature stars including Ethan Hawke ('Daybreakers', 'Black Phone'), Lena Headey ('Dredd', 'Game of Thrones'), Franke Grillo ('Werewolves', 'Superman'), and Ana de la Reguera ('Army of the Dead', 'Nacho Libre'). Each of the films appears on a 4K UHD disc and a Blu-ray disc, in this 10-disc set. The 4K UHD discs are housed in one case, while the Blu-ray discs are in another, and both are stored in an embossed, foil-enhanced slipbox that sports a collage of the cover art of the included films. A Digital Code redeemable via Movies Anywhere is also included.

With the action of the first film, 2013's The Purge, set in the then-fictional year of 2022, which was a scant nine years away when the film was made, it seems somewhat strange to think of its events as happening in what is now our recent past. The initial film boasted a cast with some well- known stars such as Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, though the film sought to trade more in action and horror-tinged elements with its home- invasion plotline rather than making good on larger ideas and/or social commentary. As the franchise continued on, this formula would endure. Larger ideas and themes would always be a part of the mix, but they would often take a back seat to on-screen mayhem, with Frank Grillo being the headliner in The Purge: Anarchy. 2016's The Purge: Election Year would wade into more effective social commentary as the future of the annual bloodbath is on the ballot thanks to a presidential candidate played by Elizabeth Mitchell, with Frank Grillo once again on hand and working to keep her safe during the dangerous night. All things considered, it's my favorite of the franchise. A more overtly political prequel, The First Purge followed in 2018, with the last installment, and likely the weakest film, The Forever Purge, arriving in 2021. The discs included here are identical to the previous stand-alone releases and no new material has been added. Please follow the links below for an accounting of their on-disc supplemental material. As Universal's previous UHD releases of the first three films did not contain any supplements the same holds true here. Previously released legacy extras for those films are found on the enclosed Blu-ray discs. The last two include extras on their UHD discs.

The Purge: 5-Movie Collection Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

As it's now been almost five years since the last installment of The Purge franchise was released, it seems that the central conceit of the films has finally been played out. Still, they have woven their way into the pop culture fabric of our society as is evidenced , for example, by them receiving some rather pointed remarks from Rick Sanchez in an episode of Rick and Morty that is set on a Purge-like world. The franchise's more ambitious themes and observations are best realized in the third installment, with the first three films being the strongest overall. For fans of the franchise who have yet to upgrade the the titles to 4K, The Purge: 5-Movie Collection 4K comes recommended.
