The Predator 4K (2018)

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home. The universe's most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

The Predator 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman February 4, 2019

20th Century Fox and Best Buy have collaborated on this store exclusive SteelBook for the UHD release of 'The Predator.' The SteelBook is externally attractive in simplicity, but the interior image does spoil the movie's ending in a manner of speaking, so those unfamiliar with the movie should probably avoid looking at it and bypass this review. More on that below in the 'Special Features and Extras' portion of the review. The on-disc content is otherwise identical to that found on the wide release UHD.

The Predator 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  n/a of 5

As noted above, the inner print artwork recreates the film's climactic scene but, spoiler alert, it curiously gets most of the details wrong. It's as if the scene was crudely and imprecisely described to the artist without any attention paid to details like which arm the Predator is missing, the clothes that McKenna is wearing in the scene, or the geography of where the scene plays out. It's a nice bit of art but it's entirely wrong if the goal was to recreate the movie's end scene. Perhaps it's a bit of early concept art work (though it wasn't present in the Blu-ray's "gallery" supplement). It's very curious to say the least, but it at least opens up the opportunity for some friendly guessing game banter about its origins. The rest of the interior is standard, with the digital copy code tucked underneath the left-side tabs and the Blu-ray and UHD discs housed on the right in standard staggered-stacked formation.

The SteelBook's smooth, glossy exterior, which is a fingerprint magnet, is not embossed or debossed in any way. The front image features the film's title in red print in the extreme upper-left portion while the majority of the front cover depicts a Predator head comprised primarily of the skulls, teeth, and spines of its victims. It's a nifty visual and very creative. The rear side is a glossy black with red Predator language aligned vertically in the center. Unobtrusive legalese appears in the bottom-left quadrant. The spine carries over the black and minimalist scheme with the film's title in red appearing center and a 20th Century Fox logo at the top.

The Predator 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

The Predator has its moments of fun, its moments of absurdity, and it wrenches in a few references fans will enjoy, but it's by-and-large a meaningless sequel. The SteelBook is very attractive and features one of the most curiously odd inner prints one will find. A/V qualities are first-rate and a few extras are included on the Blu-ray disc. Worth a look.
