Overview

The Pink Ladies (1979)

The second explicit directorial effort from exploitation filmmaker Roger Watkins, THE PINK LADIES follows the lives and fantasies of four Long Island housewives...and their husbands...and their lovers. As fantasy and reality collide, THE PINK LADIES are whisked into an ever stranger sensual dreamworld where secret desires, and secret lovers, intermix, leading to surprise revelations for all. Mixing light comedy with touches of low key surrealism, director Roger Watkins weaves a sensual tableau that simultaneously satirizes suburban sexual mores while exploring the hidden pleasures that even the most seemingly chaste housewives and businessmen can't help but enjoy. With an all star cast of Samantha Fox (Her Name Was Lisa), Robin Byrd (The Robin Byrd Show), Christine DeShaffer (Fantasm Comes Again), Kandi Barbour (Ultra Flesh), Robert Kerman (Cannibal Holocaust) and Vanessa Del Rio (The Dancers), Vinegar Syndrome brings this under-seen X rated rarity to Blu-ray, newly restored in 2k from its original camera negative and fully uncut.

The Pink Ladies Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf July 27, 2019

“The Pink Ladies” is a film about fantasies. It’s lighthearted work from director Roger Watkins, who’s not normally associated with upbeat cinema (previously helming the bleak “Her Name Was Lisa”), making something of a farce with the feature, working through episodes of characters plunging deep into their own minds to find sexual satisfaction. It’s a weird picture, but that’s part of its charm, as Watkins has no real plot to work with, turning the effort into something more episodic, with a few scenes slipping into the surreal.

A group of four women (Samantha Fox, Kandi Barbour, Robin Byrd, and Christine De Shaffer) work on their friendship through sports and social outings, planning a trip to see a production of “The Iceman Cometh.” At home, their husbands and local perverts are sex-starved, losing themselves to the power of fantasy as they imagine all sorts of sexual activity with the dismissive gang. “The Pink Ladies” uses such loose plotting to its advantage, with Watkins eschewing laborious dramatics to have some fun with the couplings, which involve different triggers, including an adult magazine (which results in bondage play), a romance novel, and commuter platform ogling, with the guys taking turns imagining ecstasy with a fellow traveler (Vanessa Del Rio).

The Pink Ladies Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Billed as "Newly scanned & restored in 2K from its 35mm camera negative," "The Pink Ladies" arrives on Blu-ray with a vivid AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation. It's a feature that loves color, and hues are bright and welcoming throughout the viewing experience, delivering pure primaries on costuming and body paint, while interiors showcase varied decoration. Fleshtones are exact while examining full body activity. Detail is also superb, capturing skin surfaces with real definition (one can even spot make-up used to cover blemishes), and clothing is fibrous, from workout gear to eveningwear. Delineation is strong. Grain is fine and film-like. Source includes some wear and tear, including mild scratches and speckling, and a few warped frames. Slight judder is also detected.

The Pink Ladies Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The 1.0 DTS-HD MA mix carries some age, but clarity is strong throughout, delivering a crisp read of performances choices and sexual satisfaction. Scoring is equally bold, with decent instrumentation and proper volume.

  • Interview (13:55, HD) with John A. Mozzer (aka Alan Adrian) finds the actor in a loose mood, answering questions about "The Pink Ladies" while fully nude. The interviewee charts the development of his career and his introduction to director Roger Watkins, working with him on "My Name is Lisa." Mozzer discusses his bondage scene, which he was more than ready for. However, the homeowner was less pleased to spy the production's sexual appetites, causing some trouble for Watkins. Locations are recounted, along with the origin of "Spike," his professional name, which even resulted in the creation of a bawdy business card to help secure additional jobs. The conversation closes with a lengthy tale concerning a magazine interview Mozzer participated in concerning his co-star, Vanessa Del Rio.
  • Interview (18:31, HD) with Art Ettinger recounts the relationship that developed between the journalist and Watkins, who give his lengthiest interview to his pal, covering all filmmaking topics. Ettinger reads from the interview, offering tidbits on Watkins's history, the amount of cast members in "The Pink Ladies" that are also in "Cannibal Holocaust," actor assessments, and memories of the bondage scene.
  • Production Stills Gallery (3:33) also includes Mozzer's business card, an autographed photo of Del Rio, VHS box art, ad slicks, and a movie review.
  • Script and Shooting Schedule (1:45) are offered.
  • And a Theatrical Trailer (4:22, HD) is included.

The Pink Ladies Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

A few surprises keep "The Pink Ladies" moving along, including its focus to pack as much sex as possible into the run time, and doing so with impressive variation, including a climactic "Fantasia"-esque orgy that involves actors in full body paint. "The Pink Ladies" is also well-acted for this sort of entertainment, and Watkins feels free enough to pursue a few bizarre visual choices, but the film's spirit never diminishes, giving fans exactly what they're looking for without Watkins's usual downer instincts.
