The Outrun Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard December 10, 2025

The Outrun is a beautiful character study and dramatic feature. Based on the memoir by Amy Liptrot. Feature story by Amy Liptrot, Nora Fingscheidt, and Daisy Lewis. Starring Saoirse Ronan.

Rona (Saoirse Ronan) must overcome her past. Rona struggles to accept her addiction and her history of self-harm. Trying to overcome her past and move forward, Rona decides to return to where she grew up: the beautiful outdoors of Scotland’s Orkney Islands.

Determined to start anew, Rona moves to accomplish a new beginning and is transported by the beauty of the scenery and the magic of the music she listens to. There is hope again. Rona can move forward.

Saoirse Ronan delivers a fantastic performance. It is one of the best performances by the gifted actress in her career to date. It is perhaps one of the most complex and moving performances Saoirse Ronan has ever delivered. Inspired by her own struggles with addiction, Saoirse Ronan delved into the role wholeheartedly and delivers something special. A wonderful and inspired performance.

The score composed by John Gürtler (System Crasher, A Mouthful of Air) and Jan Miserre (A Pure Place, Above and Below) is fantastic and a big part of the film. Music plays a central role in the storytelling. A wonderful score that adds a great backdrop to the filmmaking. The score certainly adds a lot to the filmmaking and the storytelling overall.

The cinematography by Yunus Roy Imer (System Crasher, Space Dogs) is lush and beautiful. There is so much wonder and visual splendor in the cinematography. The Outrun is a beautiful looking film and it certainly delivers fantastic visuals in spades. The cinematography shines as it offers a robust style for the feature.

Edited by Stephan Bechinger (System Crasher, The Unforgiveable), The Outrun is well paced. The editing flows well throughout. The pacing is not only top-notch but the editing finds the perfect subtle and refined moments to highlight the performances. A superb effort all around.

The production designs by Andy Drummond (True Things, Only You) are impressive and add a lot to the production, too. The designs by Drummond are creative and inspired. The backdrop of the film is all the more engaging as a result.

The costume designs by Grace Snell (The Souvenir, Mogul Mowgli) are first-rate and perfect for the cast of characters. The designs feel earthy and believable. The designs are perfect for the leading actors. A beautiful effort that showcases the subtle wonders of costume design and how important it is to the craft of filmmaking.

The screenplay by Nora Fingscheidt and Amy Liptrot is beautiful and transcendent. The storytelling is first rate. The script highlights a great character-study and does a great job bringing out the best in the cast of actors. The writing feels realistic and humble while being profound at the same time.

Directed by Nora Fingscheidt (The Unforgiveable, System Crasher), The Outrun is a stellar feature-film and one that is a must see for Saoirse Ronan fans. The Outrun is one of the best films in the career of Ronan and it has great filmmaking in spades. Not only is the leading performance exemplary, the entire film has a creative sensibility that is ambitious, beautiful, and profound. The Outrun is a masterclass and a must-see award-winning gem.
