TV series were growing up and could enjoy more sophisticated plots and characters, so along came the hour-long The New Scooby-Doo Movies. What sets them delightfully and hilariously apart is the marvellous line-up of celebrity guest stars – The Harlem Globetrotters, Dick Van Dyke, The Three Stooges, Jonathan Winters, Don Knotts, Laurel and Hardy, “Mama” Cass Elliot, and Sonny & Cher, some voicing their cartoon selves – plus the participation of other animated heroes like Batman and Robin, Speed Buggy and Jeannie.
