The release is sourced from a master that was prepared by Sony Pictures in the United States. It is not an extensive new restoration of the film and in fact the master was likely done a while ago, but the presentation is quite good. There are a few areas where it is rather easy to tell that density could and should be better, but for the most part depth remains very pleasing. There are a few segments where some light traces of fading appear in the bottom end of the frame, but they are not even remotely distracting. Quite the contrary, a lot of the darker/nighttime footage actually holds up really well. The best news is that there are no traces of problematic digital adjustments. So while some minor fluctuations can be spotted, the presentation is free of anomalies that typically emerge when a lab technical attempts to 'improve' the image. Colors are stable and appear natural, though almost certainly saturation and balance can be improved. There are no distracting large cuts, damage marks, debris, warped or torn frames to report. (Note: This is a Region-B "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-B or Region-Free player in order to access its content).
There are two standard audio tracks on this Blu-ray release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 and French DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0. Optional French subtitles are provided for the main feature. When turned on, they appear inside the image frame.
The film has a very fluid sound design because the intent of its creators was to make it look as realistic as possible. This isn't to imply that it was shot as a raw documentary feature, but you are certainly not going to be impressed by elaborate or stylized action sequences with a great deal of dynamic movement. Depth is modest but for the same reasons that are mentioned above. Clarity is very good. The dialog is stable and easy to follow.
It is pretty odd to see that this gritty thriller from the '70s can so accurately identify the main issues that complicate the ever-evolving relationship between the men and women in uniform and the people they are protecting, and understand the tremendous pressure they endure while doing their jobs and trying to stay alive. It is odd because this type of objectivity cannot possibly exist in the current political climate. It would be instantly destroyed by political activists and various other players with far-reaching agendas. The release is sourced from a master that was prepared by Sony Pictures in the United States, and even though there is some room for improvement the film looks quite good in high-definition. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
