Paramount has released the 1988 comedy film 'The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!,' directed by the trio of Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker; and starring Leslie Nielsen, Priscilla Presley, Ricardo Montalban, George Kennedy, and O.J. Simpson; to the UHD format. New specifications include 2160p/Dolby Vision video. For this UHD release, Paramount has simply ported over the existing DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack that accompanied the film's 2011 Blu-ray release. There are no extras on the UHD disc, but the 2011 Blu-ray is also included and houses the extras from that issue. In short, this is a fairly standard Paramount UHD drop with the typical video-only upgrade. This is actually the film's second UHD release. Paramount previously issued the film to the UHD format in 2023 in exclusive SteelBook packaging. That remains the only standalone issue for the film on UHD. This particular listing is exclusive to the ZAZ: The Collection! three-film UHD set which also includes a newly released UHD disc for Top Secret! and a new UHD version of Airplane!. This listing is differentiated fro the old SteelBook because there is no SteelBook included with this release. However, the disc here and in the SteelBook are identical.
The included screenshots are sourced from the UHD disc output at 1080p. They are not representative of the UHD/Dolby Vision image
you will see on your screen.
For a full UHD video review, please see my writing accompanying the 2023 UHD SteelBook release by clicking here.
Instead of re-encoding the soundtrack for Dolby Atmos, Paramount has simply ported over the existing DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack from the 2011 Blu-ray. Please click here for full coverage.
This UHD release of The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, as it currently ships in the ZAZ: The Collection! boxed set,
includes only the extras from the original
Blu-ray on the bundled Blu-ray disc. See below for a list of what's included and please click here for full coverage. Do note that there are some additional physical extras in the
ZAZ: The Collection! boxed set. More detail on those
may be found here.
The Naked Gun remains my personal favorite of the ZAZ! canon of films. It's relentlessly funny, very well acted, and a blast to watch any time the mood strikes. All of which is also true of tAirplane, but this one speaks to me just a little bit more. The UHD is solid enough. It's a shame there are no more extras than what's here -- what an opportune time this would have been to release a feature-laden set -- but for what is one of my favorite Comedies from the 1980s, I'll take what I can get. Recommended.
