Idris Elba and Kate Winslet provide considerable star power to a tale that is half survival movie, half troubled love story. A scenic if challenging environment and sound design that makes the most of the natural elements provide The Mountain Between Us with some solid opportunities for a nice 4K UHD release.
The Mountain Between Us is presented on 4K UHD courtesy of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment with a 2160p transfer in 2.39:1. As I mentioned in our The Mountain Between Us Blu-ray review, the film was digitally captured with a variety of Arri Alexa models and (according to the IMDb) finished at 2.4K DI, the first time I think I've personally seen that particular resolution mentioned. The results of this 4K upgrade are largely extremely commendable, with noticeable upticks in detail and fine detail levels across the board, to the point that it's almost possible to differentiate individual bits of snow in the 4K version, where in the 1080p Blu-ray version some scenes can tend to offer the snowy hillsides as kind of a "unified mass", so to speak. There are also almost palpable upticks in textures of fabrics, like the knit caps I mentioned in the The Mountain Between Us Blu-ray review. Shadow detail is at least marginally improved in some of the initial dark scenes in the shattered fuselage, and later in the kind of honey coated cabin sequences. The entire palette is considerably more suffused in this version, but kind of interestingly HDR hasn't really tweaked the color scheme very dramatically in my estimation. Best of all, the increased resolution doesn't really materially affect the realism of some of the CGI elements, and there isn't the same kind of cartoonish artificiality that sometimes accrues to digitally created special effects that occasionally show up in 4K versions.
The 4K UHD disc features the same great sounding DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track that I assessed in our The Mountain Between Us Blu-ray review.
Only the Director's Commentary is ported over to the 4K UHD release. The rest of the supplements detailed in our The Mountain Between Us Blu-ray review are of course available on the standard 1080p Blu-ray disc included in this package.
The Mountain Between Us may have simply bit off a bit more than it's able to comfortably chew. The survival aspects of the story are often incredibly exciting and riveting, but the love story angle plays like an overheated melodrama a lot of the time. This 4K UHD version does boast excellent technical merits, however, and fans of the cast may well want to check out this version of the film.
