The Mount of Venus Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf August 20, 2022

1975’s “The Mount of Venus” tries to have plenty of adult film fun on a shoestring budget. There’s very little here to go on, with director Carter Stevens merely using some corners of a stage, trying to turn a few spaces into a visitation from Roman gods trying to make sense of humanity. Stevens favors comedy, his first love, while heated couplings are as limited as set design money, keeping the feature low on visual power, hoping to get by on occasional charms and the rare bit of weirdness.

Jupiter (Jamie Gillis) has recovered from his last orgy, ready to organize another one with Venus (Kim Pope) and Juno (Georgia Spelvin). Trouble is, there’s very little energy available to the heavens, with Jupiter in charge of finding new worshipers, electing to visit Earth and meet with lusty women looking for help from a higher power.

“The Mount of Venus” doesn’t feature the bigness one expects from a tale of gods and mortals, with Stevens trying to cover for the static look of the film with comedy, keeping things light as Jupiter visits Earth, trying to build a following. The episodic nature of the production delivers various partners for the character and others, including an unsatisfied married woman Jupiter pleasures while pretending to be her husband. More high jinks are added to the endeavor, and wackiness is helped along by appearances from Bacchus (Kevin Andre) and Mercury (Eric Edwards), who work hard to add some snap to a static feature.

The AVC encoded image (1.33:1 aspect ratio) presentation delivers a pleasing sense of detail, exploring full body displays, picking up on fine hairs. Facial surfaces are also textured. Sparse sets are open for inspection, with the fluffiness of clouds and decorative additions. Colors are alert, capturing bright primaries throughout, and the whiteness of the heavens is distinct. Skin tones are natural. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is fine and film-like. Source is in good condition, with occasional debris and mild speckling.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix is a very simple understanding of dialogue exchanges, which are slightly limited by age, but remain intelligible. Scoring provides a funkier sound with appreciable instrumentation. Sound effects are basic.

The Mount of Venus Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Of course, "The Mount of Venus" leads to an orgy, but Stevens almost seems reluctant to include sex scenes in the picture, keeping things uneventful with his adult film stars, showing more interest in the challenge of trying to make his nickel budget look like a dime. "The Mount of Venus" isn't adventurous or all that amorous, serving more as a showcase for Stevens and his sense of humor.
