The Miracle Worker Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Svet Atanasov January 15, 2020

Arthur Penn's "The Miracle Worker" (1962) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Eureka Entertainment. The supplemental features on the disc include an exclusive audio essay by critic Amy Simmons and vintage trailer. The release also arrives with a collector's booklet featuring new essays by film critic and writer Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and film critic and author Richard Combs. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-B "locked".

The Miracle Worker was first released on Blu-ray by U.S. distributors Olive Films in 2017. For an in-depth review of the film, see Neil Lumbard's review of the North American release here.

The Miracle Worker Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.66:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, The Miracle Worker arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Eureka Entertainment.

The release is sourced from the same master that Olive Films licensed from MGM and worked with to produce the U.S. The Miracle Worker. I like it a lot. It has very good density levels and delineation is often rather impressible. In backgrounds, even in the darkest ones, there are plenty of healthy nuances as well. The grading job is convincing -- the blacks are solid but do not appear boosted, while the grays and whites are nicely balanced. There are no traces of problematic degraining corrections, which is why the grain exposure is often excellent. (My guess is that the master was struck from an interpositive, so ideally the exposure should be a tad more pronounced, but on a large screen the visuals look great). Image stability is very good. A few white flecks and small scratches remain, but they will not spoil your viewing experience. My score is 4.25/5.00. (Note: This is a Region-B "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-B or Region-Free player in order to access its content).

The Miracle Worker Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

There is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: English LPCM 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.

Laurence Rosenthal's music score is used trhrought the entire film to enhance the drama. Fortunately, the audio has been remastered and is very healthy, so the native qualities of the original soundtrack are reproduced really well. The dialog is clean, stable, and very easy to follow.

The Miracle Worker Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  1.5 of 5

  • Essay - an exclusive audio essay by critic Amy Simmons. In English, not subtitled. (12 min).
  • Trailer - a vintage U,S. trailer for The Miracle Worker. In English, not subtitled. (3 min).

The Miracle Worker Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Eureka Entertainment's upcoming release of The Miracle Worker is sourced from the same master that Olive Films worked with to produce the North American release of the film in 2017. I like this master a lot. There are a few white specks and tiny scratches on it, but it has very solid organic qualities. If you like this film and have been wanting to upgrade your DVD release, go ahead and pre-order the Blu-ray release now. I think you will be very happy with the way the film looks in high-definition. RECOMMENDED.
