The Matrix Resurrections is an exciting thrill ride and a return to the epic world of The Matrix. A sequel and reboot to one of the best action film franchises in motion-picture history, The Matrix Resurrections features electrifying action sequences and breathtaking visuals. Based on the characters created by The Wachowskis, The Matrix Resurrections stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss.
Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) return to the world of The Matrix. The rules of the game are different this time around. The stakes are just as high but the roles of the heroes aren’t just repeating what came before. Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) appears – with a new appearance. Even Agent Smith (Jonathan Groff) has some new tricks up his sleeve. Is Neo still the one or will someone else take on the mantle?
Keanu Reeves is arguably the best Hollywood film star of all time. One of the most entertaining movie stars and someone who has an incredible sense of charisma, style, and grace, Reeves makes every film he participates in all the more entertaining and rewarding. Reeves is the perfect actor for the role of Neo. The actor was perfectly cast in the iconic role. There was something magnetic about him in the original film and it is one of the primary reasons the franchise became so successful. (Bonus points for being an all-around great person in real life.)
Carrie-Anne Moss is a great match for Reeves and she is perfect in the role of Trinity. The Matrix Resurrections gives Moss a chance to flex her acting chops and play a bigger role than she previously had in the role of Trinity. The extra screen time given to Trinity in The Matrix Resurrections allows for the actress to delve further in to her character and the results are significant. A great turn by Moss.
The score composed by Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer (both of whom collaborated on the scores for Cloud Atlas and Run Lola Run) is a highlight of the film. The Matrix Resurrections has an upbeat score and the music adds to the energy and sense of surrealism in the filmmaking. Though I hoped composer Don Davis would return to the franchise (and my back-up choice was Michael Giacchino, because of his previous collaborations with the Wachowskis), Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer did a great job even if it was hard shoes to fill. The music takes the series is a new direction and yet the score feels right as rain.
The production design by Hugh Bateup (Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending) and Peter Walpole (Sense 8, In Deep) is impressive and expansive. The design efforts are outstanding. The Matrix Resurrections is an ambitious production and the sense of scale given to the film is enormous. (It should be – given the ginormous budget).
The cinematography by Daniele Massaccesi (Italian Dream, Jumping from High Places) and John Toll (Braveheart, Cloud Atlas) adds to the style of the franchise. The aesthetic keeps to the cool-tones established in the series while pushing a more digital cinematographic style. Though the film is simultaneously different and familiar in the cinematographic realm, the results work well.
Directed by Lana Wachowski (The Matrix, Speed Racer), The Matrix Resurrections is an adventurous return to the landmark science-fiction franchise. Lana Wachowski wrote the screenplay for the film alongside co-screenwriters David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas, Sense8) and Aleksandar Hemon (Sense8, Love Island). What a joy it is to return to the world of The Matrix, one of the most entertaining of all film franchises. The Matrix Resurrections is exciting and thrilling filmmaking and even without both of the Wachowski’s involved on the reboot, the film finds still manages to find good footing. Epic in scope, The Matrix Resurrections is fun time at the movies – and it somehow manages to stay true to the original films (and ending) while providing an alternate continuation that is rather brilliant in execution. The script is arguably the best part of the film and the ideas explored are highly compelling. Fans of the franchise won’t be disappointed.
Released on 4K UHD from Warner Bros., The Matrix Resurrections is presented in 2160p HEVC / H.265 in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.29:1 widescreen. The release includes both HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR presentations of the film. For more information on the technical presentation of the release, please refer to the main 4K UHD review by my Blu-ray.com colleague Randy Miller III.
The release provides a Dolby Atmos surround sound presentation. The Dolby Atmos mix has a 24-bit depth Dolby TrueHD core. For more information on the technical presentation of the Dolby Atmos surround sound presentation, please refer to the main 4K UHD review by my Blu-ray.com colleague Randy Miller III.
The collectors edition steelbook includes limited edition packaging. The steelbook design is simplistic but highly effective. The steelbook art is a great choice for the film and the data element of the film series. Visually iconic, the steelbook design is well done. The print quality of the steelbook is incredible, too. Printed with a nice gloss finish, the steelbook looks and feels great in hand. A wonderful edition for steelbook collectors.
The release includes the same on-disc supplements that are provided on the standard 4K UHD & Blu-ray combo pack release. For more information on the on-disc supplemental features, please refer to the review by my Blu-ray.com colleague Randy Miller III.
The Matrix Resurrections is an essential science-fiction adventure. The return to the world of The Matrix is one that fans of the franchise will not want to miss. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss steal the show. It is great to see these actors return to playing their iconic roles. The filmmaking is epic and ambitious.
The Matrix film series has always been a personal favorite. I have seen the original film trilogy many times over the years and it remains a favorite every time I revisit the series. (I even went to see the theatrical re-release of The Matrix in both Dolby Cinema and IMAX). Fans of the film series will be thrilled to return to this intelligent science-fiction action franchise. (The Matrix pushed the envelope for the modern blockbuster and CGI effects).
The limited-edition collectors steelbook includes beautiful high gloss packaging. An outstanding steelbook release for fans of the film. A must-own. Highly recommended.
