The Marvels 4K + 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard June 17, 2025

The Marvels is an action-packed adventure and the sequel to Captain Marvel. The 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), The Marvels is from producer Kevin Feige (Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel). The Marvels was a box-office disappointment and though it did not turn a profit it won over audiences with its impressive filmmaking and cult fan-base as a follow-up to Captain Marvel. Starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, and Samuel L. Jackson.

The epic journey of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is far from over and the fate of the universe continues to rest in her hands. Carol Danvers teams up with some new allies – the spunky Ms. Marvel – Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and the upbeat-badass Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). The trio of female superheroes form a new and exciting team known as The Marvels.

With the three esteemed heroes united as one, these incredible heroes are determined to stop the alien threat and save the entire world from imminent destruction. The superheroic ladies are also helped by the esteemed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Can Captain Marvel help train Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau while the trio learn to work together to defeat the alien threat to the universe?

The cast in The Marvels is phenomenal. One of the greatest strengths of The Marvels is the pitch-perfect casting. At the forefront of the ensemble cast is the great Brie Larson. Larson remains remarkably cool, beautiful, charming, and heroic as the legendary Captain Marvel. Larson is one of the best actresses in Hollywood and as an Academy Award winning actress she is one of the greatest cast members to join the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Iman Vellani is another great addition to the cast. Vellani has comedic sensibilities that are outstanding – with Ms. Marvel – Kamala Khan playing a sort of side-kick character with her own determination to be a leader and hero. Teyonah Parris also impresses and rounds out the trio of superheroes – providing more energetic heroics for the team.

The production scale is well-done. There are a lot of visual elements to appreciate – the production designs by Cara Brower (Candyman, Our Friend) are top-notch. The outstanding design merits are something special and well worth appreciating. The creativity of the design team helps showcase everything special about the Marvel Cinematic Universe when the franchise gets things right.

The costume designs by Lindsay Pugh (The Matrix Resurrections, Meg 2: The Trench) work well for each of the lead characters. Pugh did a great job with the costumes for each of the main characters. The designs impress in spades for the supporting cast of characters, too.

Edited by Catrin Hedström (Candyman, Little Woods) and Evan Schiff (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), The Marvels is impressively assembled. The editing is well-done throughout the feature-film. The pace of the story and the flow of the action scenes is effective.

The cinematography by Sean Bobbitt (Judas and the Black Messiah, The Place Beyond the Pines) is well done and the visuals add a lot of wonder to the production. The cinematography showcases so much splendor and visual finesse. The visual language of the cinematography is something that greatly enhances the production and filmmaking. Bobbitt has a keen visual sensibility and eye for cinematic flair.

Composed by Laura Karpman (American Fiction, Captain America: Brave New World), The Marvels provides an engaging and fun score. The music is a nice component of the production. The score energizes. The music is a great accompaniment to the action sequences and the rhythm of the production is all the more invigorating as a result.

Written by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, Little Woods), Megan McDonnell (Dark Matter, WandaVision), and Elissa Karasik (Loki, Lessons in Chemistry), The Marvels is a fast-paced and breezy screenplay. The fun script has good dialogue for all of the characters. The dialogue exchanges between the three leads creates a great sense of camaraderie. The script is often comedic and there are a lot of entertaining sequences. The action and heart of the film are brought to life through the screenplay, too.

Directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, Little Woods), The Marvels is enormously entertaining and is one of the most underrated films in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. DaCosta made a fun and action-packed gem. The Marvels is a great follow-up to Captain Marvel. Director DaCosta worked well with all of the three leads. The Marvels is a perfect showcase for how much fun can be had with a good Marvel film.
