Leos Carax's "The Lovers on the Bridge" (1991) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion. The supplemental features on the release include new essay about the work of cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier; archival documentary; and new trailer. In French, with optional English subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

Criteiron's release of The Lovers on the Bridge is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray is Region-Free. However, the Blu-ray is Region-A "locked".
Please note that all screencaptures included with this article are taken from the Blu-ray. We have not provided downscaled screencaptures from the 4K Blu-ray.
The combo pack presents a new 4K restoration of The Lovers on the Bridge on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray, sourced from the original camera negative. The 4K restoration was supervised by cinematographer Caroline Champetier, who collaborated with Leos Carax on Holly Motors. (The Lovers on the Bridge was lensed by Jean-Yves Escoffier, who passed away in 2003). In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to view it with HDR. Also, I viewed it in its entirety in 1080p on the Blu-ray.
According to official credits, the 4K restoration was prepared by TransPerfect Media France on behalf of StudioCanal. This is the same lab that delivered the recent, very problematic 4K restoration of Walter Hill's Johnny Handsome.
Unfortunately, I must report that the 4K restoration of The Lovers on the Bridge is compromised in pretty much the same way. It features plenty of tealing that destabilizes and collapses various ranges of supporting nuances. The Lovers on the Bridge is one of my all-time favorite films, and I could instantly see where the tealing had done the most damage. Blue nuances and gray nuances, both very prominent, are routinely collapsed. However, the most obvious anomalies are during daylight and well-lit footage. For example, in the market sequence, where Denis Lavant is seen stealing the big fish, the tealing in the background wipes out even more native nuances. Some darker scenes tend to hide the color shifts, but even there the collapse of blue nuances is unmissable. You can see examples here and here. You can see an example of the daylight anomalies here. The HDR grade makes the daylight footage even more distracting, so I prefer how it looks in 1080p. All of this is very frustrating because delineation, clarity, depth, and the density levels of the restored visuals are outstanding. Image stability is excellent. The entire film looks spotless. My score is 2.75/5.00.

There is only one standard audio track on this release: French DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
The 5.1 track was created exclusively for the new 4K restoration of The Lovers on the Bridge. (Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release presents the film with a lossless 2.0 track, which is exactly how older DVD releases presented it as well). I thought that the 5.1 track opened up key sequences, like the one with the Bastille Day celebration, incredibly well. Clarity, sharpness, depth, and balance are outstanding. Also, I liked a lot the size of the English subtitles.

In a perfect world, Denis Lavant would have been recognized with multiple awards, including an Oscar statuette, for at least one of his many unforgettable performances over the years. But even in his native France, Lavant has managed to earn only a single César nomination for playing the green freak in Leos Carax's masterpiece, Holy Motors. In Carax's The Lovers on the Bridge, one of my all-time favorite films, Lavant gives what can only be described as a masterclass in acting. It really is an astonishing performance. Unfortunately, this combo pack release presents a frustrating new 4K restoration of the film, prepared on behalf of StudioCanal.
