The LEGO Ninjago Movie Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman July 18, 2019

Warner Brothers and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for The LEGO Ninjago Movie. The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. Unfortunately, this is the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack only; there is no SteelBook option with a 4K disc. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

Best Buy and Warner Brothers' glossy, smooth, fingerprint-prone SteelBook is fairly nice if not a bit unimaginative. The front image is a close-up, head-only depiction of the film's hero, Lloyd. The center line is the dividing point between his face and the green bandana above it. The film's title appears top in white and red letting, the word "Ninjago" stylized in a red generic Far East-style font. Only Lloyd's eyes and eyebrows are visible; the Steelbook's bottom quarter is comprised of his black facemark. On the rear panel is another headshot, this one depicting Lord Garmadon in close-up; the bottom half depicts a snarling mouth with teeth and tongue visible and the red eyes angrily looking outward. Black headgear with fine little points of wear takes up the top half. The spine feature the film's title, center, with Blu-ray and LEGO logos at the top and a Warner Brothers shield at the bottom. The spine color is a dark green across the top half which gives way to a darker, practically black shade at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code, plus an advertisement for Ninjago stuff, are tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one DVD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features six characters from the film, all holding tightly to bamboo, which stretches up to towards the top. Appearing left to right are Zane, Jay, Lloyd, Nya, Cole, and Kai. A billing block appears bottom left.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

The LEGO Ninjago Movie almost feels quasi-experimental for Warner Brothers and the toy empire. Rather than make a hybrid movie that's part original content and part borrowed from elsewhere (The LEGO Movie) or headlined by a beloved character (The LEGO Batman Movie), this is entirely centered around original LEGO content and characters. And it works. It retains the brand charm and makes for an entertaining film that lacks the real dramatic muscle behind The LEGO Movie and the biting humor of Batman, but it's a solid effort that proves the company's lines can stand on their own. The SteelBook is of good basic presentation quality, certainly not accomplishing anything remotely special but serving the movie well enough. Recommended for those who don't mind missing out on the UHD disc.
