The Jungle Book 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman January 23, 2020

Disney and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for 2016's live action adaptation of 'The Jungle Book.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

The Jungle Book 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.0 of 5

The Jungle Book's front cover depicts a busy but attractively artistic scene in which protagonist Mowgli maybe seen slightly below center, back to the viewer, holding a torch in his right hand. He's entering an old temple that the jungle has long overtaken; vines and leaves wrap around and cover stone archways, stairs, and other structural components around and beyond him. Several of his animal friends, including Bagheera, look on at the scene. The image is fairly dark and green dominant. It lightens towards center where the torch emits a good bit of light. The rear panel is a simple depiction of a small and centered rounded logo that depicts two animals, teeth exposed, going for one another's jugular. The image is surround by a natural, earthy surface. Small white print appears bottom left (copyright Disney) and right (model number). The spine folds over the dark leafy green front cover imagery. The film's title appears center in yellow/light orange lettering, accompanied by "Disney." An UltraHD logo has been placed at the top. A Disney logo sits at the bottom. The front and rear panels are slick and glossy and will show fingerprints.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that is dominated by a cascading waterfall. Rocks protrude from the mist on the left and trees on the right. The bottom third of the right-hand side depicts terrain across which Mowgli and Bagheera walk in silhouette.

The Jungle Book 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

The Jungle Book's SteelBook is almost literally a "Jungle Book." The leafy, vine-covered front panel frames a couple of main characters and hints at the adventurous spirit within the movie. The rear panel is a little bland, as are so many Disney SteelBooks. The inner print is quite nice and the on-disc content is terrific. Recommended.
