Overview

The Jane Austen Book Club (2007)

As five women and one enigmatic man meet to discuss the works of Jane Austen, they find their love lives playing out in a 21st century version of her novels. Sylvia, is shocked when her husband Daniel, leaves her after 20 plus years and three children. Jocelyn, her unmarried best friend, distracts herself from her unacknowledged loneliness by breeding dogs. Prudie is a young French teacher, in possession of a worthy husband yet distracted by persistent fantasies about sex with another man. The many times married Bernadette develops a yearning for one more chance at happiness. Beautiful, risk-taking Allegra, Sylvia and Daniel's lesbian daughter, has quit talking to her lover. And Grigg, a young science fiction fan and computer whiz, seems horribly both out of place and obliviously at ease as the only man to be invited into the book circle.

The Jane Austen Book Club Blu-ray Movie Review

An overpriced second printing.

Reviewed by Randy Miller III August 18, 2026

Sony has recently reissued writer/director Robin Swicord's The Jane Austen Book Club on Blu-ray, priced (as of this review) at a whopping $33.99. Unfortunately, it's the exact same disc that we got in 2008, from the hilariously dated pre-menu ads to the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio mix, which is currently priced at $14.99 with plenty of pre-owned copies available for pennies on the dollar. Had this been an OOP title it would have been a slightly less offensive case of corporate greed... but instead, it's one of the year's most pointless releases and an insult to fans.

For a synopsis and light appreciation of The Jane Austen Book Club, please see Martin Liebman's review above. I watched this for the first time recently and agree with Marty's take: your enjoyment of this film may hinge slightly on your full-bodied appreciation of Austen's six-novel bibliography, since that's essentially what the main plot revolves around, but it can still be appreciated for its more surface-level charms and enjoyable performances.

The Jane Austen Book Club Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.0 of 5

For details about the film's 1080p transfer, see Marty's Blu-ray review linked above. Even though this is the exact same disc as what we got in 2008, I'm giving this one slightly lower marks due to increased expectations during the last two decades. More than ever, this film could've used a visual tune-up rather than just a cheap repackaging job.

The Jane Austen Book Club Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.5 of 5

Conversely, I'm awarding this Blu-ray's decent but hardly exciting Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track slightly higher marks than Marty gave it despite their identical mixes, if only because there's likely not a great deal of room for improvement here. Likewise, all alternate audio tracks and subtitles remain the same as what we got on that previous disc.

The Jane Austen Book Club Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

This one-disc release ships in a keepcase with a slightly retooled cover design (different text positioning and banners) and boring plain white disc art; otherwise, all on-disc contents are exactly the same including the same vintage bonus features listed below. For more details about each one, please see Marty's 2008 Blu-ray review linked above.

  • Audio Commentary -With director/screenwriter Robin Swicord, film editor Maryann Brandon, producer Julie Lynn, and actors Hugh Dancy and Maggie Grace.

  • Behind the Scenes of The Jane Austen Book Club (18:49)

  • The Life of Jane Austen (21:48)

  • The Book Club: Deconstructed (11:43)

  • Walking the Red Carpet: Los Angeles Premiere (2:46)

  • Deleted Scenes (7 clips, 6:46 total)

  • Previews - For a bunch of old-ass movies.

The Jane Austen Book Club Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  1.0 of 5

If Sony's 2008 Blu-ray of The Jane Austen Book Club ever goes out-of-print and commands sky-high prices on the secondary market, then this identical MOD (pressed) reprint might be worth picking up. But that 2008 disc is still easily available at less than half the price of this one, so there's absolutely no reason to buy it right now.
