The Hunt for Red October 4K Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Martin Liebman February 29, 2020
Paramount has widely released a SteelBook packaging variant for the first of now several Jack Ryan films, and the best, 1990s
'The Hunt for Red October.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release, which was heretofore only available as part of a five-film boxed
set. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

The Hunt for Red October 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

This "30th Anniversary" SteelBook, glossy and slick and fingerprint prone across its red, black, and yellow dominant tones, depicts four floating heads
down the left hand side: Captain Ramius, Jack Ryan, Bart Mancuso, and Captain Borodin. The film's title appears further left, the words "The Hunt for"
in a red box atop "Red October" running downwards, the former word in red and the latter in yellow. Also appearing are actor names Sean Connery and
Alec Baldwin, first
name red, last name yellow. The right hand side is a predominantly red mass of imagery, which includes a Soviet hammer and sickle atop a radar
screen, the Dallas bursting out of the water, and a few helicopters flying about. The rear panel features large block text depicting Russian
words. A torpedo rushes through the water bottom right while a chopper and a destroyer can be seen above the surface. Like the front, it's largely red
and black and yellow. The spine features the film's title, center, identical in presentation to its layout on the front. A Paramount logo appears on the top
and UltraHD and Blu-ray logos at the bottom.
Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in
staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a dark red and black image of a sub in the water. It's very subdued.

The Hunt for Red October 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

It's nice to have a classic in 4K and in its own packaging; here's hoping Paramount continues to release more Ryan films in 4K in SteelBook packaging.
The presentation is OK, emphasizing red color, characters, and submarines, pretty much the key ingredients that make the movie tick. And what a
movie! The UHD presentation is sound, but it would have been nice if Paramount could have included a few more extras. Highly recommended.
