The Human Centipede: The Complete Sequence Blu-ray Movie Review

It may not even be Halloween yet, but there is always something to be thankful for, a la Thanksgiving, even when confronted by the daunting prospect of having to review The Human Centipede: The Complete Sequence. Suffice it to say these films have been fairly controversial, and they are certainly not going to be everyone’s particular cup of tea (one probably rightfully shirks from using food and/or drink based metaphors considering these films’ conceit). But here’s the good news: my colleague Casey Broadwater has already reviewed the first two films, and I will gladly defer to his judgment on those releases (see links below), while stating that this Scream Factory release offers some new supplements for each of the first two films, which are detailed below (this release also offers The Human Centipede 2 in color for the first time, and so all of the screenshots accompanying this review are from that version, so that fans can see what it looks like in this format). The third film is being released for the first time on Blu-ray, and I will do my duty (no scatological pun intended) and review that (see link below).

The Human Centipede: The Complete Sequence Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

The first two films now sport both DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 mixes (the original release of the first film featured only an LPCM 2.0 track, while the second film offered only a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track). The surround tracks offer intermittent immersion, especially in some of the over the top effects sequences. Fidelity is excellent and dynamic range very wide, with good prioritization granted to the dialogue.

• The Ladies of The Human Centipede (1080p; 47:44) contains new interviews with Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie, Maddi Black and Kandace Caine.

Human Centipede 2

• The Color Version of the Film (1080p; 1:27:23). Color adds surprisingly little to the film's impact, and indeed only seems to exacerbate the aliasing that Casey mentions in his review of the black and white version (it's really egregious at times, and on elements one wouldn't think would normally cause issues, like Harvey's glasses). I've tried to approximate some of Casey's screenshots from the black and white version so that those interested can do a side by side comparison.

The Human Centipede: The Complete Sequence Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

The Human Centipede films are (again shirking somewhat from a food based metaphor) not to everyone's taste. Those who do like these films will find this new Scream/IFC release to offer generally decent to excellent quality, and Scream's usual supply of well done special features.
