One of the best fantasy film series of all time receives the steelbook treatment.
Reviewed by Neil Lumbard January 30, 2021Let's go there and back again. The Hobbit Trilogy returns with a brand-new 4K restoration supervised by director Peter Jackson. The mammoth cinematic undertaking was no small feat. Originating as a standalone adaptation of the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien before being expanded to two-films (and then ultimately three), Jackson's prequel trilogy sets the stage for the events to come in his epic masterwork, The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Middle Earth saga has now become one of the most beloved fantasy series in the history of the motion-picture.
Starting with the fun adventure of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, continuing in the much-darker The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and concluding with the epic send-off that is The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Jackson brings together dwarves, orcs, elves, wizards, and even a special Hobbit – Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman). No fan of The Lord of the Rings should go without experiencing the high-adventure of the prequel saga and the 4K UHD presentations are the best available to date. Essential.

The steelbook editions for The Hobbit film series are exclusive to Best Buy stores. The premium steelbook packaging is more impressive for The Hobbit series than it was for The Lord of the Rings: inner art-work selections are fantastic and are suitable for each installment in the saga. The art work is creative and fantastical: leaving a perfect vibe to the entire collection. The print quality does a leave a bit to be desired, though. The average-quality matte printing doesn't feel are premium as full-gloss or spot glossed steelbook designs. Fans will still find the exclusive packaging to be an intriguing proposition.
There are no on-disc extras included in The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy 4K collection. Warner Bros has decided to not include any previous supplemental features. The assumption is that most fans already own previous editions of the trilogy and therefore don't need re-packaged discs with the supplements.
Note: Warner Bros will release an ultimate Middle Earth six-film collectors edition in the summer of 2021. The complete set with contain brand new supplemental features (which are currently still in production).
The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation
One of the best fantasy series ever made, Peter Jackson's Middle Earth saga is an essential film experience that is further heightened across The Hobbit trilogy with each installment in the action-packed saga. The 4K steelbook collection (exclusive to Best Buy) features stunning art work that collectors will salivate over – though the matte print quality leaves something to be desired. Is it a worthwhile purchase? Considering the complete Middle Earth ultimate collection is upcoming (due around the summer of 2021, complete with brand new and exclusive bonus features), fans might wish to hold out a little longer. For fans who can't wait: The Hobbit films look outstanding in 4K HDR with superb high bit-rate encoding and each entry is worth a re-visit. Recommended.
