The Godfather Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Paramount has released a beautiful box set featuring the three 'Godfather' films (including 'The Godfather, Part III' in two original cuts and its new 'Coda' cut) in beautiful 4K UHD/Dolby Vision video and newly remastered mono audio. The supplements are the same as those found on the cheaper box set. Also included is a coffee table hardcover book and three prints suitable for framing.

The Godfather Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

Paramount's exemplary boxed set measures, externally, approximately 12.5" high, 10.5" wide, and 1" thick. The box has a very nice, lightly textured faux-leather type feel to the material. It is all black and all blank beyond the front panel; there is nothing on the spine and nothing even on the rear, not even small a small studio logo. The front features the famous puppeteer Godfather logo beside the "50 Years" anniversary marker. Both are in dark gold and inlaid into the surface. It is centered along the Y-axis but a bit above the center X-axis.

The box opens like a book, and there is a fabric tab that facilitates lifting it out. Inside is a book, a handsome coffee table book that is practically identical to the external box: the book feels like the outer shell, it is also black, and there is nothing on the spine or rear; only the same inset text appears on the front, but it is black here rather than gold. The book is of twofold purpose. First, of course, it offers handsome glossy full color and black-and-white images scattered throughout, both stills from the film and behind-the-scenes candid shots. The book opens with a brief intro from Director Francis Ford Coppola and continues to explore each of the three films in some depth, primarily through photos, which are also captioned with some detail. Some fun extras are scattered throughout, such as full-page text quotes from the film, typed script pages with heavy written notes and editing, and storyboards. Second, the back of the book houses the discs, five in all. The first film earns its own page while the other four are spread across the following two panels with the UHD discs at the top outer corners and the bonus discs on the bottom interior corners. The discs are secure but also easy to remove.

Also included are three character prints suitable for framing. These are full color art renditions of Vito Corleone as portrayed by both Marlon Brandon and Robert DeNiro and of Al Pacino as Mchael Corleone. The prints measure about 12" high and 10" wide. They are pre-matted and will look great in any frame. A single digital copy sheet with three codes for each film are included as well.

This is a handsome presentation that defines the concept of the classy, prestigious home video box set. It blows away the standard issue set for packaging stability but also attractiveness and content.

The Godfather Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Simply, this is a must-own for any Godfather fan. If there is a shortcoming it may be that the book doesn't include any serious text; a brief intro and some photo captions are about all that are included. There are no essays or anything of the like. Otherwise, this is a perfect release and earns my highest recommendation.
