Cesare Canevari's "The Gestapo's Last Orgy" (1977) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of 88 Films. The supplemental features on the release include new program with filmmaker Luigi Cozzi; new audio commentary by critics Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson; new audio commentary by critic Samm Deighan; alternate Italian ending for the film; international trailer; and more. Several decades ago, the Naziploitation films were heavily censored and routinely banned, so tracking down uncut copies of the most scandalous ones was quite difficult. A film collector could also get into some serious trouble for purchasing copies of most of these films – uncut or cut. Even the big and well-received ones, like Liliana Cavani’s The Night Porter, which is now in the Criterion Collection, were frequently targeted by different authorities.

Of all the Naziploitation films, most of which are pretty poor, Cesare Canevari’s The Gestapo’s Last Orgy is one of the more interesting, worth seeing for a couple of reasons. These reasons have virtually all to do with how The Gestapo’s Last Orgy was made and why, not the visuals and thrills it produces.

Canevari directed The Gestapo’s Last Orgy a couple of years after The Night Porter and Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS, arguably the two biggest Naziploitation films, from a screenplay he co-wrote with close collaborator Antonio Lucarella. Canevari also produced The Gestapo’s Last Orgy and, initially, handled its distribution rights in several big markets. As the Naziploitation fever peaked in the late 1970s, Canevari reportedly hoped to make a bundle and then work only on projects he liked or retire in style. However, perhaps unsurprisingly, The Gestapo’s Last Orgy permanently damaged a lot of valuable relationships Canevari had with important people in the Italian film industry.

The Gestapo’s Last Orgy is a hybrid project, which is what makes it different from the majority of other Naziploitation films. It is a very small film, but one that tries very, very hard to pass for a big one, funded with a proper budget.

Its narrative is broken into two uneven parts. In the first, after the end of WWII, Holocaust survivor Lisa (Daniella Pogi) meets former SS officer Conrad (Adriano Micantoni) at the exact place where her descent into hell started. Their encounter then unleashes a series of flashbacks, each depicting utterly repulsive acts of torture, humiliation, and perversion at a concentration camp where Conrad is the most powerful man. Amidst the madness, Lisa seduces Conrad, and the two begin falling in love. Sort of. In the second part, it is gradually revealed that their unhealthy relationship means completely different things to them. Back in the present, a dramatic reset then delivers a most predictable exclamation point.

It does not take a genius to figure out what Canevari was trying to accomplish. The mayhem in the first part produces plenty of the thrills the conventional Naziploitation films were expected to deliver at the time, and the second part produces material that was supposed to validate its existence before those who had praised The Night Porter. However, the merger of this material is very awkward, so the end product is a legitimate over-the-top shocker, rather than an easy-to-brush-aside kitschy genre film or an edgy art film.

The Gestapo’s Last Orgy is a wild time capsule, a prime example of a film that can no longer be made. Why would anyone want to make another film like it? This is not the relevant point. The Gestapo’s Last Orgy is representative of a freedom to create that was very, very badly mismanaged. As such, and because of its disingenuity, it is worth enduring.

The Gestapo's Last Orgy Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, The Gestapo's Last Orgy arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of 88 Films.

I have previous experience with this scandalous film on VHS and DVD and must admit that its high-definition presentation is rather remarkable. It literally looks like a proper big-budget genre film now. It has been fully restored in 2K. There is only one aspect of the presentation that I think could have been managed slightly better. In several areas, but not all, select facial tones emphasize the color pink a tad too much. All other primaries and supporting nuances are properly set. There are no traces of any problematic digital corrections. Image stability is excellent. I noticed a few tiny blemishes, but there are no large cuts, marks, debris, warped or torn frames to report. (Note: This is a Region-Free Blu-ray release. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your player regardless of your geographical location).

There are two standard audio tracks on this Blu-ray release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono and Italian DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono. Optional English subtitles are provided for the main feature.

The film should be viewed with the English track, which is an original, fully overdubbed, track. However, it is not a great track. It has several areas with obvious balance fluctuations. Its range of dynamics is very limited as well. However, this is how the English track was finalized. In other words, these are inherited limitations, not recent flaws that may have been introduced during the film's digital restoration.

The Gestapo's Last Orgy Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Judged strictly by its ability to disturb, The Gestapo's Last Orgy is a pretty decent film. However, because it shamelessly switches personalities and attempts to pass as a close relative of The Night Porter, it is one seriously disingenuous film, too. This is what makes it an amusing time capsule. Such a film is impossible to recommend to mainstream viewers and collectors. However, those who like to explore the darkest corners of genre cinema may consider acquiring this release. It brings a pretty remarkable restoration of The Gestapo's Last Orgy.
