Overview

The Fast and the Furious 4K (2001)

Dominic Toretto drives the streets of LA like he owns them. As far as his crew is concerned, he does. He spends his days rebuilding high performance race cars and perfecting the art of computer controlled fuel injection. By night, Dom pockets up to $10,000 each time someone dares to race him in his own earth-bound rocket of a car. Dom lives off of the adrenaline of street car racing and his fans treat him like a rock star. Brian particularly looks up to Dominic and seeks his approval, but to the rest of the crowd, he's white bread. After a blazing encounter with the ruthless Johnny Tran, Dom decides to take Brian under his wing. Dom's sister Mia sees something she likes in Brian, too. Trouble is, neither of them realize he's an undercover cop and Dominic and his rival Johnny Tran are both the leading suspects in a case involving dirty money and big-rig hijacking.

The Fast and the Furious 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 15, 2021

Universal and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for the franchise-igniting 2001 film 'The Fast and the Furious.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel. Note that this store exclusive release includes some physical content not included with the wide SteelBook release.

This SteelBook ships in an embossed slip box that features the same artwork from the SteelBook's front panel on the front while the back matter houses all of the usual content: a color image collage depicting what's included in the box, a plot summary, tech specs, special features listings, a billing block, legalese, and the like. Inside the slip box, beyond the SteelBook, are several goodies. First is a glossy color stapled booklet that includes typed script excerpts from The Fast and the Furious on one side and full color photos from the film on the other. A second glossy, color, stapled booklet entitled The Cars of 'The Fast and the Furious' features two-page-spread pictures of the key cars seen throughout the film as well as driver identification, a driver portrait, and a couple of other pictures of the vehicle. Finally, five color, glossy, heavy stock cards are included. They feature a main character portrait on the front and the name of the character and the actor on the back. Included are Brian, Dom, Letty, and Mia. A fifth card features all four in black and white with a streak of color and a car center. The rear side serves as a post card which can be mailed to another The Fast and the Furious fan.

This slick and smooth exterior shell depicts, on the front panel, images of Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner and Vin Diesel's Dominic Torretto side-by-side, in profile, both looking left with stern, serious faces. Brian is closer than Dom. Their heads and upper chests float top center. Below them, a bit below the midline, is the film's title in white at a diagonal with "20th Anniversary Edition" text in yellow underneath. Filling the bottom third or so is a picture of two of the key cars in the film, driven by Brian and Dom, in full color, again mostly in profile and again with Brian's closer than Dom's. In the background throughout the panel are various buildings and trees, the ones on the bottom almost looking like X-ray renditions. There are streaks of light moving across parts of the panel to give the feeling of forward momentum. The rear panel shows the same two cars seen on the front racing down the street, facing forward and streaking towards the bottom and out of the SteelBook. The image is slanted and the buildings and trees behind are askew. There's a purple tint to the road and some streaks again signify a feeling of movement. A Universal logo and legalese appear bottom center and a model number bottom right. The spine is simply a black panel with the film's title in white and the 20th Anniversary text in orange filling the bulk of the length. A Universal logo has been placed at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a horizontal portrait depicting eight of the main characters from the film.

The Fast and the Furious 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

This is a nice enough SteelBook. Some might find the front a little busy and Photoshop-y, wishing instead for something with a little more artistic flavor, but it's a capable enough SteelBook in the aggregate. The film is excellent, as is the UHD presentation. While this package costs a few dollars more than the above-linked wide SteelBook release, film and franchise fans will want to choose this one for the added physical bonuses which are quite nice. Highly recommended.
