The Expanse: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker January 19, 2024

All six seasons of 'The Expanse' arrive in one boxed set courtesy of Universal. The 68 episodes are spread across 15 discs and a solid assortment of special features are included with seasons one through four. The series boasts a very solid video transfer and an impressive English DTS HD-Master Audio 5.1 track that fans will certainly want to add to their collections.

The Expanse tells the story of the inhabitants of Earth, Mars, and the Belt as they struggle to coexist. Set some 200 years in the future, technology has progressed to levels sufficient to allow for interstellar travel, exploration, and terraforming, but unfortunately, humanity has not kept pace. In fact, it's remained stagnant. Greed and ambition continue to fuel every malady that plagues our race, with racism, classism, poverty, hunger, and disease as prevalent then as they are now. As is the case with the best science fiction, many topical issues of today's world are cast into the future where we can more easily explore them safely at arm's length. Dedicated fans helped the show survive cancellation by the SyFy channel after the third season and it returned for three more on Amazon Prime. A stellar cast that includes Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Cara Gee, and Shohreh Aghdashloo, makes this essential viewing for fans of intelligent, smartly written, sci-fi that can easily go toe-to-toe with the likes of Battlestar Galactica and the best that Star Trek has to offer. Can they overcome their differences to come together as one united people?

The Expanse: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

High production values, moving stories, and a huge and impressive cast of regulars and guests make The Expanse a memorable viewing experience. While the series does provide a rather dim view of humanity's future, we're essentially the same we just have much better phones, it does provide us with a similar level of hope with which we face today's struggles - that the right people in the right place can create real and positive change. We just need to try to be, or at least listen to, those people. After weathering cancelation, the show came to a seemingly final end at the close of season six, but the door is left open for further adventures from Earth, to Mars, the Belt, and beyond. Will those adventures arrive on the big or small screen? And if so, when? As of this writing, it's unknown. But even if those further stories fail to arrive, tense, emotional, and action-packed, The Expanse: The Complete Series deserves a spot on every science fiction aficionado's shelf.
