The Exorcist Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 11, 2019

Warner Brothers and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for Director William Friedkin's celebrated Horror film 'The Exorcist.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release, at least insofar as it pertains to the Extended Director's Cut disc, which is the only one included in this set. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

The Exorcist Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

This SteelBook foregoes the usual slick and glossy fingerprint magnet sort of front and rear panel in favor of one that's more tactile, grippy, and flat. Fingerprints will still lightly show in the black areas but not to any sort of excess. The front image depicts a classic still that's become synonymous with the movie. Surrounded by black and here lit by blood-red lighting, a man in a suit and hat and holding a briefcase in his left hand looks towards his left to a residence where evil undoubtedly awaits inside. The film's title in white lettering, fading towards the bottom, with some extra detail above and below ("William Peter Blatty's," "Extended Director's Cut," "Directed by William Friedkin"), appears top-center. The rear panel is a great looking still photo of a crucifix dangling from a hand; the background is blurry. It is again made of black and blood red color. The spine is a flat black color with the film's title and "Extended Director's Cut" text centered. A Warner Brothers logo appears at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The lone Blu-ray disc is situated on the right hand side. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a demon possessed Regan MacNeil gazing menacingly if not a little playfully on the left. The image fades towards the right, which is almost entirely black with only some of the blood red color faintly carrying over. A small billing block appears bottom-left.

The Exorcist Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

This is a terrifically designed SteelBook that does away with the slick and glossy style that's so prevalent on the marketplace. The artwork looks great and favors blood-inspired minimalism and classic movie imagery rather than crude visual splash. The on-disc content is excellent but it's a shame that WB couldn't have included the Theatrical cut disc. Highly recommended.
