The Evil Dead 1 & 2 4K Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Martin Liebman February 17, 2021Lionsgate and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release which includes 'The Evil Dead' and 'The Evil Dead 2' on UHD. The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the individual UHD wide releases (see 'The Evil Dead' and 'The Evil Dead 2'). See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Lionsgate usually puts out a good SteelBook and this double feature set is certainly no exception. The SteelBook ships inside a transparent plastic
slipcover that includes some vital information, such as the film titles in red, scrawled along the bottom in front of a hazy, inky black background. At
the
front top, in small print and a bit hard to see, is the notice that the set includes UHDs, BDs, and digital copies. Printed
on the back side is the usual information cluster with a blurb, photos, tech specs, a billing block, legalese, and the like. The spines are identical on
both
sides. "The Evil Dead SteelBook Collection" text in red appears above center while an UltraHD logo, a Lionsgate logo, and a Studiocanal logo
all
appear at the bottom.
The SteelBook proper features a solid black background. The finish is not matte and textured but it's also not slick and glossy. Some fingerprints will
show but it's certainly not quite so prone to displaying them in full force as some SteelBooks of similar color schemes are apt to show. The front is
busy, depicting Ash, soaked in blood, looking forward from about the waist up and holding a chainsaw above his head, ready to slice and dice some
deadites. From the front of the SteelBook he's being attacked from all sides by severed hands, bony fingers, a hand with a knife, and some branchy
tentacles. It's a grizzly scene; keep this one hidden away from the little ones (and these movies, for that matter!). The rear panel is a pretty cool
image
depicting Ash
standing atop his famous Delta 88. He's on the hood holding his "boomstick" in his left hand and an axe over his shoulder with his right hand. The car
is
parked in the woods behind which is a vortex-looking pattern in the sky. The spine is similar to that on the slipcover. The title is centered. The
UltraHD
logo is gone but the pair of studio logos remain.
Inside, the digital copy floats; there are no tabs to hold it down. The set includes four discs, two for each film, one UHD and one Blu-ray. The inner
print
is a two-panel spread that, unlike the outside, is dominantly red. It's a blood-red scene of the cabin in the woods where much of the horror in the two
films unfolds.

The Evil Dead 1 & 2 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

It's grizzly but it's great. Lionsgate has done a first-rate job on this SteelBook collection for its layout, looks, and feel. It would be nice if the UHDs included some more extras but they're solid in the tech spec department. Highly recommended.
