There have been quite a few releases of anime over the past several months featuring yōkai, those strange, exotic and often whimsical creatures culled from Japanese folklore. In fact, NIS America, the label bringing out Everyday Tales of a Cat God, recently went down this path with the charming Natsume's Book of Friends: Season 3. While many of these supernaturally themed anime had comedic elements, they were mostly dramatic in content. Everyday Tales of a Cat can’t exactly be called a typical yōkai anime, as it’s dealing with a mischievous Cat God named Mayu who finds herself banished from heaven due to some unsavory antics. She soon teams up with a human girl named Yuzu and gentle laughter, if not outright hilarity, ensues.

The Everyday Tales of a Cat God (which bore the original if unpronounceable title Nekogami Yaoyorozu) is kind of a nutty anime, full of lunatic characters and improbable situations. A number of other local Gods come into the fray, with both Mayu and Yuzu repeatedly getting into predicaments and then extricating themselves. There are some fairly interesting developments along the way in this series, but there may be an overriding feeling of “been there, seen that” from longtime anime fans.

The Everyday Tales of a Cat God is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of NIS America with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. This is a solid, if sometimes pretty soft looking, high definition presentation that boasts a considerably varied palette and some good line detail. The series has a tendency to sometimes shirk on backgrounds or even character movements, but overall there's nothing major to complain about here.

The Everyday Tales of a Cat God features an uncompressed LPCM 2.0 mix that suffices quite well for this anime's mix of dialogue, score and occasional sound effects. Fidelity is excellent, and dynamic range is quite wide, especially in some of the more lunatic interactions between the characters.

This is another in the continuing line of Premium Editions from NIS America, which include two discs in slimline cases housed in a sturdy slipcase which also contains a hardback book. The on disc supplements are as follows:

The Everyday Tales of a Cat God is a charming but somewhat derivative piece that will appeal to anime fans who aren't too demanding and who have the patience to let the series unfold at its deliberately languorous pace. There are a few surprises in store for those who can stick with this series for a few episodes. This typically handsome NIS America set features very good video and audio and comes with minimal but decent on disc supplements as well as the usual hardback book. Recommended.
