The Demon Girl Next Door: Complete Collection (2019)

When Yuko Yoshida wakes up one morning to discover that she’s sprouted horns and a tail, she learns something that her mother has been meaning to tell her. You know that battle between the Light and Dark that’s been going on since the dawn of time? Well, Yuko’s family are the bad guys. So now, Yuko has to defeat a local magical girl to win back some of her family’s vanquished power so they can afford to go to the all-you-can-eat pancake restaurant. And, of course, it turns out that the Magical Girl goes to Yuko’s school, but Momo’s really nice and keeps rescuing Yuko, which is pretty embarrassing and leaves Yuko rather conflicted… but… all you can eat pancakes? Sometimes you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t when you’re THE DEMON GIRL NEXT DOOR!

The Demon Girl Next Door: Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard January 21, 2024

The Demon Girl Next Door is a sweet and charming anime comedy with a lot of fun elements to offer anime nerds. Created by Izumo Ito, The Demon Girl Next Door is a charming confection of fun for an audience of geeks with a love of fantastical demon-led storytelling. Produced by Atsushi Yoshikawa, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Junichiro Tanaka, Shinichi Nakamura, Takaaki Nakanome, and Toshiyasu Hayashi, The Demon Girl Next Door is a compelling creation.

The series features lead vocal performances by the cast of Konomi Kohara and Akari Kitō. The series also features voice work by supporting voice actors Ayaka Suwa, Hitomi Ohwada, Minami Takahashi, Sayaka Ohara, Sayaka Senbongi, and Tomoyo Takayanagi. Fans of fun and light anime comedies will enjoy.

Yūko Yoshida (Konomi Kohara) wakes up from her silent slumber one evening to discover that she is no longer who she once was. Yūko has grown demon horns and a long tail overnight. Apparently being a teenager wasn’t hard enough. Yūko soon learns that there was something important that her family forgot to tell her.

Yūko’s family comes from a long line of bad guys – and as such, she has demon heritage. Now Yūko must learn to face-off against local girl Momo Chiyoda (Akari Kitō) to become the demon leader. If Yūko can’t manage to become a demon master herself, she won’t be capable of affording the bountiful foods of the local all-you-can-eat pancake restaurant. What will Yūko do to become a demon girl like no one has seen before?

The series benefits from a good cast of central characters. The main characters on the series are fun and charming. Having charming protagonists is a good element of any anime comedy series. The cast for the series is entertaining and the character designs by Mai Otsuka (How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom, Non Non Biyori) add something special to the series. The designs are certainly unique. Exploring a nice line between anime comedy and anime fantasy.

The animation is outstanding. There are a lot of great elements to appreciate with regards to the production. The animation showcases excellent art direction by Shinji Kawai (The Slayers Revolution, Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time) and chief animation direction by Mai Otsuka (Non Non Biyori Nonstop, Shakugan no Shana), Ryoichi Oki (Hayate the Combat Butler!!, Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling Club), Takamitsu Satou (Angels of Death, Mewkledreamy Mix!) as well. The anime style is superb and there is plenty for comedy fans to appreciate. The team of animators did a good job exploring these characters and the demon fantasy elements. These aspects add something charming to the production.

The cinematography by Yoshio Ookouchi (One Punch Man, Sweet Blue Flowers) is impressive and the colorful animation has a lot going for it. The cinematography is certainly bright, crisp, and engaging. Wonderful cinematography. The aesthetic is enhanced by the efforts of the cinematographers. An impressive effort overall.

The score composed by Miki Sakurai (The Quintessential Quintuplets, Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater) is charming and light fun. The score adds a sense of fantastic energy to the series – the delightfully engaging and charming elements adding something to the production. Sakurai is a good composer and there is a lot to enjoy. The score adds wonder and whimsy to the series.

Written by Keiichirō Ōchi (The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses, The Quintessential Quintuplets), The Demon Girl Next Door is a well-done fantasy series with good comedic elements. The comedy is an important part of the series. Fans of anime comedies will certainly be intrigued by the concept.

Directed by Hiroaki Sakurai (Cromartie High School, The Everyday Tales of a Cat God), The Demon Girl Next Door provides whimsy and fun comedy for genre fans. The charming distractions of the series certainly provide something entertaining for audiences. The directing is solid and the series has an impressive aesthetic. Worth checking out.
