Bruno Corbucci's "The Cop in Blue Jeans" (1976) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Raro Video. The only supplemental feature on the release is an exclusive new audio commentary by critic Rachael Nisbet. In English or Italian, with optional English and English SDH subtitles for the feature. Region-Free.

Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, The Cop in Blue Jeans arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Raro Video.
The technical presentation of The Cop in Blue Jeans is a mixed bag. A few sections of the film look somewhat acceptable because delineation, clarity, and depth are mostly pleasing. In these sections, color balance is mostly pleasing as well. However, the overwhelming majority of the film has an oddly anemic appearance. For example, in darker areas, the range of dark nuances can be very limited. (See the nightclub sequence where Tomas Milian treats his new girlfriend as a streetwalker). Grain exposure is very subdued as well. Color balance is not right, either. It looks like someone desaturated all primaries and nuances to hide pre-existing color anomalies, and then, while guessing, gave the film an almost neutral color temperature. This is not how this film is supposed to look. The best news is that there are no traces of any seriously damaging digital adjustments. However, because of the other adjustments highlighted above, the dynamic range of the visuals is pretty underwhelming. Ultimately, the very best areas of the current presentation of the film look only barely acceptable. My score is 3.25/5.00. (Note: This is a Region-Free Blu-ray release. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your player regardless of your geographical location).

There are two standard audio tracks on this Blu-ray release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Italian DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH (for the former) and English (for the latter) subtitles are provided.
I viewed the entire film with the English track. I had to turn up the volume of my system a bit more than usual so that I can hear all exchanges. Obviously, this track features overdubbing that has native fluctuations. However, I think that a new remastering job can easily introduce several meaningful improvements in terms of stability and even dynamic balance. There are no audio dropouts or distortions.

In the 1970s, Tomas Milian played numerous unhinged characters in various genre films that are now considered cult classics. Hardly any of these characters were conceived exactly as Milian played them. They turned out this way because, at the time, Milian struggled with cocaine and alcohol addictions that routinely impacted his work. The Cop in Blue Jeans features one of these unusual characters, dominating it in a pretty bizarre way, easily giving it an equally unusual identity. Understanding that Milian's unhinged performance makes it impossible for The Cop in Blue Jeans to be a proper genre film is crucial. It does not guarantee that one would enjoy it. However, it places everything that happens in it in a proper context. In my opinion, The Cop in Blue Jeans is classic Italian cinematic cheese, served with a sense of humor that now seems permanently lost. Raro Video's presentation of it is rather tolerable. Consider picking up this release when it goes on sale. RECOMMENDED.
