Six films in the classic Thin Man franchise were released between 1934 and 1937, four directed by W.S. Van Dyke before his death and all starring the irreplaceable William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles. All six were released as a DVD set by Warner Bros. in 2004, but there were initially only offered on Blu-ray separately by Warner Archive between 2019 and 2022. Now almost three years later, the boutique label offers a space-saving alternative that packs all six Blu-rays into one handy package at a reduced price, which will likely annoy those who own them already. If you're really starved for shelf space or somehow didn't buy them all yet, this one's worth picking up.
For my thoughts on each 1080p transfer, please see my separate reviews below. Also, please note that the video rating for this review reflects an average of all six individual ratings.
Likewise, my thoughts on each DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio mix can be found at the separate reviews below. Again, please note that the audio rating for this review reflects an average of all six individual ratings.
This six-disc set ships in a relatively thin keepcase that's slightly wider than a standard one but much slimmer than all six original releases side-by-side. Each disc gets its own hub and two hinges keep things nice and tidy -- no damaging sleeves or overlapping discs to worry about here. This collection also sports artwork taken from WB's 2004 DVD boxed set of the same name, although several legacy bonus features from that boxed set are still missing in action. That said, each film boasts a few era-specific extras as outlined in the individual reviews below, and again my overall rating for these supplements reflects a weighted reflection of the highest individual review rating.
In my review of the sixth and final film in the Thin Man saga (released on Blu-ray by Warner Archive in January 2022), I lightly recommended it unless the boutique label would "issue some sort of compact six-disc set in the near future". I'm not sure if almost three years qualifies as "the near future"... but either way, The Complete Thin Man Collection has finally seen the light of day. It's really nothing more than a space-saver if you already own them all separately (can you just buy the case?) and may annoy those who would've rather bought a full set the first time. If you didn't, however, this is a pretty economical way to get the whole saga in one fell swoop. Highly Recommended.
