Just in time for Thanksgiving!
Reviewed by Randy Miller III November 3, 2022Universal Studios' "big three" Rankin/Bass holiday specials -- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town -- have finally been released in 4K with fully restored 2160p transfers that present these classic films in their best quality to date. This six-disc set rightfully groups all three together and also includes brand-new Blu-ray copies based on the new 4K masters. These specials are also available as separate 4K combo packs (each linked below), with no stand-alone Blu-ray options currently offered. Hey, there's always tomorrow.

Much like that release, this new slimmed-down 4K collection does not include the mid-tier Rankin/Bass specials Frosty Returns, The Little Drummer Boy, Cricket on the Hearth and Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, which were part of Classic Media's later Original Christmas Classics Anniversary Collector's Edition set.

This six-disc set ships in a standard-width keepcase with two hinges and hubs for each disc. Packaging is similar to past Universal releases, which even extends to the disc menus. A single Digital Copy slip for all three films is also inside.

Rankin/Bass' "big three" classic holiday specials Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town still hold up more than 50 years after their original broadcasts, ready to entertain yet another new generation of viewers. Sure, they'll air several times during the upcoming holiday season, but Universal's beautiful new 4K masters will thrill die-hard fans with their superior detail, color, and texture, allowing us to fully appreciate the efforts of the original creative teams. Although the lack of new extras spoils the party a bit (not to mention the other Rankin/Bass specials that didn't make the cut, including some that haven't even earned home video releases at all), this decently-priced set is clearly the way to go if you're a fan of all three films. Highly Recommended.
