The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Blu-ray Movie Review

Boondoggle.

Reviewed by Martin Liebman July 19, 2013

Sony has re-released 'The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day' to Blu-ray as a Best Buy exclusive in an extended-length Director's cut two-disc set. Disc one contains the longer 138-minute cut alongside two new featurettes. Disc two is the same as the Spring 2010 initial release with only a little housekeeping performed to revamp the menus and make minor presentation alterations.

Two guns, one kill, from above the head. Is that what they mean by "overkill?"

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

There's no appreciable difference in video quality between either of the included 2.35:1 1080p transfers and that found on the previous release. Please click through the link above for a more detailed video review.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

This release features what appears to be the same primary English language DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack as that found on the first release. Note that both included cuts ditch the Portuguese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack found on the initial release for a German presentation of the same variety. Several new subtitle options are also included. Please click through to the review linked above for a more detailed audio review.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

While this re-release of All Saints Day appears to be overloaded with extra content, it really doesn't bring much that's new to the table. Disc one contains two new featurettes sure to please die-hard Boondock and Troy Duffy fans. However, both commentaries are merely carryovers from the original release. There's no major insight into the new scenes, either. The film does seem to flow a bit better with the added content, but it's still an "acquired taste" film and certainly not as catchy and memorable as its cult classic predecessor. Sony's press release identifies the new scenes as "27 minutes of never-before-seen footage, including a longer opening sequence, a lengthened fantasy sequence and an extended elevator sequence leading to the Prudential shoot-out." Disc two, as noted above, simply carries over everything from the theatrical release, including the same pair of commentary tracks. The menu has been redesigned to replicate that found on the new director's cut disc, and old previews and BD-Live functionality have been removed.

Director's Cut Disc:

  • Audio Commentary: Writer/Director Troy Duffy and Actors Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, and Billy Connolly speak, well, not really about the film, or if they do it's often very abstractly. It's the same track as found on the old release; see the above-linked review for more details. With optional German and Spanish subtitles.
  • Audio Commentary: Writer/Director Troy Duffy and Actor Willem Dafoe offer a more balanced track with greater insight into the film and the Boondock universe. Again, it's the same track as the previous release; see the above-linked review for more details. With optional German and Spanish subtitles.
  • Saints Off Script (HD, 19:34): Troy Duffy speaks on the importance of having fun and a relaxed confidence on the set. The piece continues with the cast and crew enjoying themselves on-set, understanding and embracing the kind of movie they are making, answering fan questions, exploring character tattoos, joking on-set, and more.
  • Back to Boondock (HD, 20:51): A somewhat more serious piece that begins with a description of the preproduction process and looks into shooting Ireland in Toronto as well as the details behind wardrobe, makeup, and hair. It also focuses on the "block shooting" process, the importance of an involved director, and more.
  • Previews: Additional Sony titles.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Sony's re-release of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day contains a lengthier director's cut and a couple of new supplements. Die-hard fans will definitely want to double-dip for the new footage and bonus features. This is also the current definitive release, and anyone who has put off buying the film should definitely choose this one over the older one, unless for some reason a BD-Live logo, different previews, a Portuguese language track, or two fewer extras are deal breakers. Video and audio qualities are excellent. The film isn't for everyone, and it's nowhere near as brilliant as the original. Worth a purchase for fans, worth a rental for newcomers.
