The Big Bang Theory: Season 11 manages to bring the acclaimed sitcom to new territory as the series continues to evolve and become even better than it was in the beginning. The characters grow and develop and the cast find new ways to make the series remain relevant. There is an abundance of energy at hand: from co-creator Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men) to the team of co-writers working throughout the series run. Fans will want to tune in for this penultimate season and see where the characters at the heart of the series head to next.
As season 11 picks up with the after-math of the proposal at the end of Season 10, the characters at the forefront of the series are tossed into new situations which challenge them and their day-to-day lives. Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) face a new future together. Will the couple tie the knot? The question lingers and events start to unfold throughout the season that explore their intertwined lives.
The season has a number of great moments to keep fans entertained with the ensemble cast including Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), and Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Rauch) giving it their all. Leonard finds a new potential job that is more engaging for him, Howard and Bernadette explore parenthood in new ways, Raj has a career boost at the planetarium, and Stuart (Kevin Sussman) manages to transform his comic-book shop into a breakthrough success.
"So... Blu-ray.com has a way to catalog movies and TV series? Sweet!"
There is even a cool sub-plot during season 11 around honorary cast member Wil Wheaton (himself) as he goes up against Sheldon in competing for the coveted role of Professor Proton in the rebooted children's television series. The dynamic between the two remains as humorous and charming as it was at the beginning of the series. (The season also has some compelling guests stars with the likes of Bill Gates and Mark Hamill making cameos).
The series remains a surefire comedic hit in season 11 and the writing remains as dynamite as always. The comedy is one of the primary reasons the series has managed to stay relevant after so many seasons on air. The actors manage to perform with pitch-perfect precision and their characters bounce off of one another with clear enthusiasm that is so easy for audiences to connect with. The dramatic portion of the show has also continued to grow and develop.
The 11th season is one of the most ambitious from a dramatic standpoint and the story line of Amy and Sheldon's romance is a vital part of the overall story. The characters don't stay static: becoming mere stationary figures attempting comedic riffs for the audience. Rather, the characters have grown and evolved and the season is one of the best in the series run as a result. The Big Bang Theory never manages to tire or run out of steam. Fans love the show for a reason: it's a comedic masterpiece, perfectly blending together great characters, comedy, and drama for a winning formula.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Warner Bros., The Big Bang Theory: Season 11 features a 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition presentation in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The presentation quality of the series has continued to impress over the seasons and the later episodes seen in season 11 are some of the most striking and visually compelling: the production has a nice digital sheen to the cinematography that makes each episode appear slick and polished. Colors are natural and bright. The encode quality is equally superb, with each episode having sufficiently adequate encoding for the presentation experience.
The release features an exceptional DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound presentation. The lossless audio track sounds superb throughout the entire presentation. As a sitcom series, the surround sound fields are less utilized than on a more action-oriented television series but the occasional ambiance effects do add to the experience. Dialogue reproduction is crisp, clear, and easy to understand. This is a perfect sounding audio track that fits the bill.
The Big Bang Theory: 2017 Comic-Con Panel (HD, 33:31) features moderators/series actors Riki Lindhome and John Ross Bowie along with writers and executive producers David Goetsch, Eric Kaplan, Maria Ferrari, Steve Holland, Bill Prady, Steven Molaro and series cast members Kevin Sussman, Kunal Nayyar, Kaley Cuoco, and Johnny Galecki. The group answer fan questions: something that makes it a worthwhile extra for the fans.
The Maturation Imperative (HD, 11:05) features co-creator Chuck Lorre, executive producer Steven Molaro, and Steve Holland discussing the eleventh season. The producers are also joined by members of the cast including Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch, and Mayim Bialik. The cast and producers discuss some of the big moments of the season and the growth of the characters: with a special focus on the growth of Sheldon during the pivotal season. Focusing on the developing narrative in season 11, the group delve into the game-changing season finale and where the series might head to next.
A Big Bang Theory History of Time (HD, 5:05) is a fitting tribute to the brilliant Stephen Hawking. Hawking, who appeared on many episodes throughout the series run, became a huge part of the show with his regular guest spots. This loving tribute includes the participation of co-creator Chuck Lorre, executive producer Steve Holland, and other writers and producers who discuss Hawking's essential involvement in the show.
The Big Bang Theory: The Blueprint of Comedy (HD, 5:43) explores the behind the scenes production of a scene with the cast crafting a scene from an episode. The feature also includes the participation of Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro, and Steve Holland.
Gag Reel (HD, 7:01) features outtakes from the eleventh season.
The penultimate season of The Big Bang Theory is one of the best in entire series run. There are many outstanding episodes and several big moments help to make it stand out from the pack. The season finale is magical and one of my favorite episodes in the series. The season shows a lot of growth: exploring the characters in a more mature way while keeping the comedy every bit as laugh out loud funny as it has always been. There is little doubt in my mind that fans will enjoy this superb season. A must-own Blu-ray release.
