Re-edited US version of the 2D feature Mit Eva Fing die Sünde an (1958), with new footage shot in 3D by future Hollywood big shot Coppola. A naive bellboy dreams of becoming a private eye and practices by spying on ‘suspicious’ characters in the hotel where he works, especially the beautiful young women (representatives of a famous lingerie firm) who parade around their rooms in various states of undress. Guess which scenes are in 3-D?!

The Bellboy and the Playgirls follows the cartoon misadventures of a horny bellboy looking for big breasts in a world of confusion. The film is a classic example of old-school bait-and-switch luring horny men to a film experience with next-to-no sensuality or erotica to entice. The annoying and downright dull The Bellboy and the Playgirls is a total snooze and will lull viewers to sleep.
As soon as one realizes they are being lulled into a deep sleep, viewers will realize that there is something afoul about this early slice of exploitation sleaze. The issue with the film is that it's so atrociously boring that one might feel as though watching paint dry would literally be a better and more exciting experience. The entire storyline is downright ridiculous and the characterizations are as paper thin as they come. Viewers might feel as though this is merely something “to be expected” from old-school exploitation production featuring a cast of beautiful bosom ladies. Regardless, the experience is entirely underwhelming.
The bellboy wants to play with more than just bells!
Unfortunately, The Bellboy and the Playgirls is merely a poor attempt at classic golden era erotica with little to no scenes with actual eroticism to muster anyone's genuine enthusiasm. It's not until the film is nearly over that the sly curtains start to rise with beautiful women undressing from their garments and by the time these fleeting moments of sensuality arrive viewers will most definitely be comatose. The bellboy is a downright obnoxious and the most annoying character and the awful scriptwriting makes the experience even more laborious.
There's only a few scenes with any sensuality on display and there is almost no nudity to be found, either. Even the early involvement of the would-be auteur Francis Ford Coppola for this nudie-production falters and doesn't even remotely showcase his legendary skills as a filmmaker. To put it mildly: The Bellboy and the Playgirls sucks.
While it was obvious Adam and Six Eves received a lot of love and care for its restoration in 3D, The Bellboy and the Playgirls is considerably less impressive on Blu-ray. It appears as though a dated master was used and while it is not in terrible shape there are some moments of thin scratches on the film print that are distracting. The 3D presentation is almost not even worth writing about. The film is laborious and only one scene is even in 3D (and its towards the conclusion). It seems rather pointless wearing the 3D glasses during an almost entirely 2D presentation. An underwhelming presentation (even if the brief 3D is effective).
Unfortunately, the audio track provided for The Bellboy and the Playgirls is comparatively awful. The track is largely out of sync from the visuals (which makes for an almost laughable distraction). The audio fidelity is resoundingly mediocre throughout and does not impress at any point during the presentation. The track isn't as crisp or well-defined as it is on Adam and Six Eves. While it's completely underwhelming, there are no major issues with pops or hiss on the track.
Update:
I received the following message from an individual involved in the production of the release and found the information insightful. The note addresses both the audio and video presentation on the feature. Please feel free to take the note into consideration.
Note from Bob Furmanek at 3-D Film Archive:
Regarding BELLBOY, the audio is not out-of-sync on our restoration and Blu-ray master. The bulk of the footage is a German film that was dubbed into English in 1961.
The scan on BELLBOY was taken from the 35mm composite negative. This is a brand new scan and restoration done in 2019. Picture quality is based on baked-in limitations of the original source material: 35mm composite dupe negative on the original German footage and the color and 3-D footage shot by Coppola was filmed in 16mm. There's no way that is ever going to look as good as if it had been filmed in 35mm.
To learn more about the supplemental features, please refer to the primary listing for the 3-D Nudie Cuties Collection.
The Bellboy and the Playgirls is an utter bore which could easily put anyone to sleep (and there is only one scene in the film which has 3D to boot). The included shorts are both entertaining and add to the quality throwback experience. For any straight, heterosexual man with a 3D setup, The 3-D Nudie Cuties Collection is an essential release which is worth picking up even if not every film in the set is worth one's time. Get it for the unmissable Adam and Six Eves.
