The Batman 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Hey, didn't we do this already?

Reviewed by Randy Miller III October 31, 2022

Released a full six months after Warner Bros.' standard 4K combo pack and several packaging variants including a now out-of-print Best Buy Steelbook, Best Buy has released a second Steelbook variant of Matt Reeves' The Batman for those who missed out the first time. Featuring a similar overall color scheme and aesthetic as the first release (not to mention identical disc contents and another Digital Copy, of course), its design elements are a sidestep rather than an improvement but still make this a release worth owning for die-hard fans of the packaging format.

For a synopsis and critique of the film, please see my 4K combo pack reviewfrom earlier this year.

The Batman 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

For an evaluation of the 4K disc's 2160p transfer, please see my 4K combo pack review. Separate coverage of the included Blu-ray's 1080p transfer can be found here.

The Batman 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

For an evaluation of both movie discs' 2160p Dolby Atmos audio, please see my 4K combo pack.

The Batman 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

This three-disc set ships in attractive matte-finish Steelbook packaging with a dominant black and red color scheme; Batman strikes an intimidating pose in front of the Batmobile with rain pouring down and the film's logo centered up top. The Steelbook's aesthetic continues with a blurrier image of The Riddler on its back cover, surrounded by shadow, holding a handwritten sign with movie credits at the bottom. The inside image spread is rather uninteresting, with a mostly muted image of The Batman walking towards the Batmobile. It's by far the least impressive design element of an otherwise good-looking package, although its front and back images would look better without the text.

On-disc bonus features are identical to those found on the 4K combo pack.

The Batman 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Matt Reeves' The Batman is an accomplished piece of atmospheric cinema and the solid first step of a planned trilogy, even if bits and pieces of its story and narrative flow show some room for improvement. Best Buy's new Steebook re-release features a similar aesthetic to their now out-of-print first Steelbook; one that sidesteps a few design elements still looks great overall. A recommended pick-up if you missed the first Steelbook or don't own this on 4K yet.
