Shout! Factory via Shout Selects previously released 'The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai' to Blu-ray in 2016 as a two-disc (one Blu-ray, one DVD) special edition. This collectible SteelBook packaging houses those same two discs. The packaging is a bit bland, honestly, particularly the back cover. Read on for more.

Shout! Factory's SteelBook release of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai features the same discs as the studio released in 2016. Please click

The SteelBook packaging is certainly minimalist. Every element is laid atop a fairly nondescript, kind of boring off-white/light gray background, and the
rear cover offers little beyond that, just some light artwork across the middle (which carries over from the front side) and a small body of text at the
bottom. The front side offers a little more
life. The film's title is sprawled across the upper third of the package with the words "Buckaroo Banzai" offset in larger, and red, print. In the middle is
a landscape sketch while the bottom features 14 characters in
pastel colors. It's too bad that Shout! couldn't use the much more enjoyable artwork from the arrow release. The
spine features the film's title in center, Blu-ray and DVD logos up top, and studio logos down below. Inside, both discs are staggered-stacked on the
right-hand side rather than simply one on either side of the package so as to make removal easier. That does give better visual access to the inner
print, which is predominately made of shades
of red, and it depicts a scene from the film. And that's really about it.
If nothing else, this set is worth buying for the theme music alone. The loop on the menu is about as contagious a beat as they come. The movie is a lot of fun, too, the Blu-ray presentation is solid, but the SteelBook is kind of bland. Collectors will want to pick it up just for completion's sake, but this one takes the beauty in minimalism a little too far.
