Kind of like that veritable box of chocolates Forrest Gump 's mother waxed philosophical about, you never know quite what you're going to get with Jack Black. That is most definitely the case with this third volume of ostensible "masterworks" from Black's Tenacious D consortium (and/or partnership, depending on how you want to look at things). While both the previously released Tenacious D: The Complete Master Works (note that the link points to a DVD, the only "modern" format available) and Tenacious D: The Complete Master Works 2 were grab bags of a sort, this third volume probably outdoes both of the former releases in that it offers three "categories" of content, the band's concert at London's O2 Arena in 2023, some music videos (which are at times nothing other than marketing pieces), and a six chapter Post-Apocalypto animated adventure.

Much as with that allusion to "variety" in a veritable box of chocolates, Tenacious D: The Complete Master Works Vol. 3 is presented on Blu-
ray courtesy of MVD Visual with both AVC 1080p and MPEG-2 1080i encodes, mostly (but not always) in 1.78:1 (see screenshot 8 for a wider aspect
ratio from one of the music videos). The concert and music videos are the AVC 1080p transfers, with Post-Apocalypto being the MPEG-2
1080i presentation. Since my hunch is some may be mostly concerned about that older codec and an interlaced presentation, the good news is the lack
of any real movement in this supposedly animated piece means combing artifacts are nowhere to be found, and otherwise line detail on the minimalist
aesthetic is fine, and the palette is also nicely suffused. The concert has a slightly digital look at times, with just the barest hint of posterizing in certain
lighting conditions, but again offers generally excellent clarity and detail levels, to the point that as things go on and Jack becomes seriously
drenched in sweat, some may find some of the imagery comically disturbing in an unexpected way. The music videos are a varied lot in terms of both
approach and general look, but offer good detail levels and nicely vivid palettes.
Note: While our specs database allows us to show discs that have both progressive and interlaced presentations, we only have one choice for
an actual codec, so I opted for AVC since that covers two of the three categories on the disc.

Casey wasn't especially enthused about Vol. 2's LPCM 2.0 track, and my hunch is audiophiles will be disappointed that there's only LPCM 2.0 audio on all three categories of content here, with a surround track being especially sadly absent from a pretty high energy live concert. Overall, the sound is fine, though some of the most noticeable discrete stereo imaging may be from the Post-Apocalypto piece and the music videos, with the live concert tending to offer more of a "wall (or, in this case, dome) of sound" ambience due to the arena setting. That said, the live concert features a generally winning mix that smartly focuses on vocals and acoustic guitars. There are no subtitles on this disc.

While there are the three above mentioned "categories" of content here, there's nothing officially listed as an on disc supplement. The release comes with a cardstock insert featuring the cover art on one side and track listings and credits on the other. The keepcase also encloses a folded mini poster with the cover art. A DVD is also included. Packaging features a slipcover.

There may be even more unintended comedy from the often anarchic Mr. Black in terms of Tenacious D kind of stumbling into the high definition era first with a 720p presentation for Tenacious D: The Complete Master Works 2, and now a veritable "combo platter" featuring 1080p and 1080i presentations delivered via AVC or MPEG-2. Maybe Vol. 4 will actually give fans a surround track for at least some of its offerings. Of the three different sections on this disc, I much preferred the live performance and music videos to Post-Apocalypto, but of course other fans' mileage may certainly vary. Technical merits are generally fine, and as Casey mentioned with regard to Vol. 2, at least for Black and/or Tenacious D fans, this release should be similarly appreciated.
