Tapestry of Passion Blu-ray Movie Review

Reprising his most famous role, John Holmes returns to screens as Johnny Wadd, a private detective dedicated to helping his clients and he also enjoys sleeping with them. 1976’s “Tapestry of Passion” is a strange title for what becomes a movie about serial killing, occult practices, and sadomasochism, and there’s almost no passion in the picture. However, there are villains and women with money looking for help, putting the main character on the prowl for answers around San Francisco. Holmes isn’t exactly a charmer, but he remains the focal point for the endeavor, with co- writer/director Alan Colberg trying to assemble a somewhat dark take on adult cinema, adding elements of danger and threat that don’t exactly mix well with more heated encounters. Entertainment remains with the oddness of the story and a few confrontations, but “Tapestry of Passion” isn’t particularly successful with suspense and erotic intensity.

Black Widow (Sharon Thorpe) is a killer who specializes in tempting her victims with sexual promises, working with assistant Carl (Mick Jones) as she builds a sex lair in her house, using it to collect men. Tom (John Leslie) is one of the dead, recently taken by Black Widow as she tries to find pleasure in pain. The “sex ritual murders” are headline news, but instead of going to the police, Tom’s sister, Jean (Leslie Bovee), turns to Johnny Wadd (John Holmes), a local private detective, for help. Johnny hits the streets on the hunt for clues and suspects, and additional aid is requested from Patricia (Annette Haven), Tom’s wife, soon recognizing that something evil is happening in town. However, while trying to reach Black Widow, Johnny is distracted by many lovers, keeping him busy in and out of the bedroom.

Perhaps a fundamental issue with “Tapestry of Passion” involves its position as a detective story that contains no mystery. Black Widow is immediately identified as the person behind the serial murders happening around town, joined by Carl, her trusted companion and part-time thief whom she loves to beat up to help release her aggression. She’s the villain of the feature, and one who’s transformed part of her house into a sex dungeon, hoping to lure oversexed men into her lair, feeding them a special poisoned tea while tempting them with physical promises. One of these victims is Tom, an insatiable “freak” who can’t control himself, finding Black Widow’s ad in the local paper, happy to pay her a visit. Tom doesn’t last long, choking down his bitter beverage and welcoming restraints, soon killed by Carl when the usual plan doesn’t work.

Jean wants answers concerning Tom’s death, going to Johnny for help when law enforcement isn’t available(?). Johnny’s a bit of a bum, happy to nap and drink his days away, but when a client is ready to pay for his services, he’s ready to go. “Tapestry to Passion” follows Johnny as he hits the streets, visiting businesses and meeting people to help acquire additional information. He’s also in contact with Patricia, who’s a lonely woman, upset about the situation with Tom, requiring a more personal touch from the private eye. “Tapestry of Passion” gets most of its erotic material from Johnny’s interactions with clients, happy to take time out of his day to sleep with these women, who simply can’t resist a day drunk who owns Budweiser bedsheets.

Black Widow has her own issues, and eventually meets Johnny, who stops by to check out the lair, unsure if he wants to book a session with the mistress. She’s drawn to his intense masculinity and large penis, setting up a reversal of sorts as the detective plays hard to get. An additional experience involves the introduction of Cindy (Patricia Lee), the widow of the killer’s latest victim. She’s understandably distraught, but certainly not above having a quickie with Johnny as she works through her grief.

The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation for "Tapestry of Passion" is listed as "newly scanned and restored in 2K" from its 35mm original camera negative. Detail is acceptable, exploring an extensive display of skin particulars and wispy hair. Costuming remains fibrous. Interiors are dimensional, examining living spaces and sex dungeons, maintaining somewhat clear decoration. Exteriors are deep as the lead character tours the city, visiting shops and streets. Colors are alert, with a bright feel for period hues around apartments, and clothing choices are vivid. Evil actions are supported by deep reds and blacks. Greenery is distinct, along with signage. Skin tones are natural. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is heavy and film- like. Source is in rough shape at times, with wear and tear a common sight. Lengthy scratches are detected, along with some damaged frames.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix offers decent dialogue exchanges, maintaining as much clarity as the original sound recording allows. Performance choices and carnal response is intelligible. Scoring offers basic aural support, with acceptable instrumentation.

Tapestry of Passion Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

"Tapestry of Passion" teases a potentially interesting dramatic avenue to explore in Johnny's encroaching depression, growing blue over his lost faith in humanity and the grim elements of his job. Of course, Colberg isn't going to pursue this in full, electing for a campy conclusion involving a rubber spider and overwhelming male sexuality to help bring the feature to a close. It's not exactly a disappointment, but as adult cinema goes, Colberg shows signs of a more adventurous creative direction for the picture. However, he doesn't take it, but he doesn't generate a sluggish viewing experience, doing well with the mild private eye elements of the tale, and the supporting cast offers a little spice to keep things interesting. "Tapestry of Passion" isn't for those who enjoy puzzles with their detective fiction, aimed more at the Holmes-faithful and admirers of beer-branded bedroom décor.
