Disney has released the 2010 digitally animated film 'Tangled' to the UHD format. New specifications include 2160p/HDR video and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. No new extras are included but the bundled Blu-ray disc, which is identical to that which Disney released in 2011, brings over a fine assortment of extra goodies.
The included screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray disc.
Tangled isn't messy on UHD. Disney's 2160p/HDR presentation elevates the visual material quite nicely over the 1080p/SDR Blu-ray,
constructing a picture that may not be a radical transformation but one that does benefit from the adds the format provides. The first opportunity to
explore the finer detail increases and color improvements comes near film's start on a painting depicting the king and queen seen at the 1:40 mark. The
UHD offers a more tangible texture to the canvas, showing the paint depth and brush strokes with appreciably more sharpness than the Blu-ray can
reveal. Likewise, the detail work on the frame appears finer and more lifelike, while the tones in the painting and even the bronze framing display with
improved depth and detail. Rapunzel's glowing locks (see the 4:20 mark) are gorgeous on the UHD, boasting brilliant brightness while solidifying the
tone's depth and purpose well beyond the capabilities of the previously released high definition issue. The HDR colors fortify weathered woods and
stones around the tower, deepen various greens around the countryside, and bring life to any number of colorful flowers and clothes, all with the
expected adds to depth and contrast and tonal nuance that HDR can provide. Sharpness and clarity increases are evident throughout as well. The
picture is more alive, healthier, more finely realzied on the screen. Fine object details are generally sharper, again with special emphasis elements like
brick and stone but also considering Rapunzel's hair in close-up and the various natural wonders around the world.
The HDR colors additionally yield deeper, more accurate blacks that assist in adding accuracy to nighttime exteriors, low light interiors, or black clothes
alike. Conversely, whites are brilliant and crisp. The HDR color improvements are evident from the entire spectrum, and the boosts to clarity are
tangible in most every shot. While the UHD doesn't transform the picture or improve on the Blu-ray by leaps and bounds, the various refinements are
most welcome, even as the Blu-ray remains a perfectly serviceable and agreeable way to watch the movie. Add the absence of any obvious compression
issues and Disney has a winner on its hands.
Tangled entangles listeners into the film with a quality all-around Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The audio does not seem to be overly compressed or wanting for significantly more dynamic range. In fact, the first large action scene -- a foot and horse chase in chapter three -- delivers plenty of low end might as the animals rush their riders to their prey. Music swells here, too, with large, expansive notes spilling from the entirety of the stage, including overhead, which acts as a support mechanic for the scene. Much the same holds true in the film's later action scenes. It's a well rounded listen once the volume has been upwardly adjusted. Additionally, atmospherics are well defined and precisely placed, always presenting with appropriate engagement to more fully set a scene. Dialogue is true and well prioritized.
Tangled's UHD disc contains no supplemental content, but the bundled Blu-ray is identical to that which Disney released in
2011 and brings with it the entirety of this set's supplemental content. Below is a listing of what's included. Please click here for full review coverage. A Movies Anywhere
digital copy code is included with purchase. This release ships with an embossed slipcover.
Tangled is a trademark Disney feature: song, dance, adventure, humor, heart, and underlying themes of individuality, freedom, self-worth, and true love all make this a magical movie that's worthy of being Disney's 50th animated feature film. The UHD isn't remarkable, but it makes for a solid color and clarity upgrade over the existing Blu-ray. No new supplements have been added, but the bundled Blu-ray brings over all legacy content. Recommended.
