In the 1930s, Emmet Ray is the second greatest jazz guitarist in the world, second only to the legendary Frenchman Django Reinhardt. Beyond his musical genius, Emmet is charismatic, but also conceited, noncommittal, and self-mythologizing. In New Jersey, he falls for Hattie, a shy and mute woman who earns her living doing laundry. He is hesitant to remain faithful, convinced an artist must be free. Later, however, he weds Blanche, a beautiful and refined author, on impulse and abandons Hattie. Their union proves tempestuous, and Emmet also runs afoul of a gangster.
