Tom Clegg's "Sweeney 2" (1978) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Network Releasing. The supplemental features on the disc include an original trailer for the film and other vintage promotional materials; and more. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-B "locked".
Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Sweeney 2 arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Network Releasing.
Similar to the first Sweeney spin-off, Sweeney 2 has been restored in 2K from the original camera negative. My take on the technical presentation is identical to that of the other film. Basically, I have nothing but great things to say about the new master because it is painfully obvious that it was done with great care and respect for the native qualities of the film. The color grading in particular is simply beautiful. However, when the master was finalized the folks at Network -- or the people that did the restoration on their behalf -- did some grain management work to rebalance the visuals. There is nothing disastrous, but I am not a fan of it because it essentially transformed a flawless master into a very good one. What does this mean? It means that if the raw master was transferred to Blu-ray without any adjustments, you would have been looking at a 'reference quality' presentation of the film. As it is the master is still very good, but now in some darker areas it struggles to convey nuances that were previously exceptionally easy to spot. (No, I have not seen the raw master, but I know that this was the case. Screencaptures #5 and 15 prove it). Image stability is outstanding. There are no distracting debris, cuts, damage marks, stains, or other annoying age-related imperfections to report in our review. (Note: This is a Region-B "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-B or Region-Free player in order to access its content).
There is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: English LPCM 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
The audio is clear and free of age-related imperfections. Some balance fluctuation remain, mostly during the mass footage, but they are undoubtedly inherited from the original soundtrack. I had to turn the optional subtitles a few times because some of the exchanges contain street jargon that is rather exotic. There are no audio dropouts, pops, hiss, or background distortions to report.
I can't see how someone that had a great time with the first Sweeney spin-off would be disappointed by Sweeney 2. In certain areas this film is even better, boasting an even more outrageous sense of humor. John Thaw, a really special actor, earned plenty of critical acclaim for his contribution to the Inspector Morse TV series, but I think that his finest hour was in The Sweeney and the two spin-offs it inspired. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
