Suspiria is a Hollywood remake of the original horror classic directed by renowned filmmaker Dario Argento (Phenomena). The film explores a dance company and its group of dancers as they go on a journey full of (horrific) surprises that no one expected. Susie (Dakota Johnson) is one of the lead dancers and she struggles with bringing her best performance to life under the direction of Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton).
With talented dancers like Sara (Mia Goth) by Susie's side while out on the dance-floor, can Susie overcome her inner obstacles and achieve true greatness both inside-and-out? Darkness looms in unexpected ways. Featuring an impressive co-performance by Chloë Grace Moretz as Patricia, Guadagnino's Suspiria is a horror film worth checking out.
There are a number of impressive elements to the big-budget production. Suspiria features impeccable visuals with cinematography by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (Happy Birthday, Call Me by Your Name). Featuring haunting imagery and impressive visual techniques throughout the film, Suspiria makes an impression as a worthwhile cinematic experience. The costumes by Guilia Piersanti (Call Me by Your Name, A Bigger Splash) are fantastic and seem pitch-perfect for the dance sequences. A great effort that elevates the material and matches it well.
Perhaps the coolest thing about the film is the music by Thom Yorke (of Radiohead). Fans of Yorke will no doubt want to experience Suspiria for the impeccable music. The score blends in to the film easily and makes the filmmaking all the more haunting and memorable. Yorke once again proves to be a master musician.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love, Call Me by Your Name), Suspiria might not be seen as a great remake when compared to the original, yet the film has a lot of interesting elements that are worthwhile. The stylistic flourishes are compelling and worth checking out. And Guadagnino ultimately brings forth great performances from the cast – especially Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton.
A dance of horror.

Suspiria is presented in 2160p 4K resolution in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 widescreen. The release is of a native 4K scan and the presentation uses the HDR10 standard. The film looks a bit inconsistent for a native 4K presentation. The 4K imagery is exceedingly dark at times and it can be sometimes be a little underwhelming compared to more visually organic 4K scans. Even so, this is certainly a transfer that benefits from having a sharper image – and one that is true to the cinematic roots of the production. The HDR implementation is impressive as well (with the striking use of color during the dance sequences and the concluding act of the film making good use of the extended colors). While far from a perfect 4K presentation, Suspiria is a modest upgrade over a standard Blu-ray and is worth a look.
The 4K release includes an exceptional Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The Atmos sound mix is enormously engaging throughout. The music score is well implemented in to the spectacular sound mix. For more information on the Atmos audio track, please refer to the review of the standard Blu-ray release (as written by my colleague Jeffrey Kauffman).
The 4K release includes a teaser trailer and theatrical trailer – presented in either English or German language. No other extras are included on the 4K edition (or the Blu-ray included in the combo pack release).
Suspiria is worth a look in 4K. The film is shocking and horrifying and yet it creates a compelling narrative that is well worth experiencing. The filmmaking is top-notch. The 4K UHD is a modest upgrade over a standard Blu-ray presentation. While not a reference 4K disc, it is worth a watch. Recommended.
