Gigolo con man Latigo Smith (Garner) needs to get something off his chest - the tattooed name of his most recent ex-fiancé. But while he's waiting for the local doctor to sober up and perform the operation, Smith overhears that local mining baron Taylor Barton (Harry Morgan) is looking to shut down his mining competition by hiring the notorious gunman, Swifty Morgan. Seizing the opportunity for an easy con, Smith passes off a reprobate cowhand (Jack Elam) as the dreaded Swifty and pockets the cash. Bankroll in hand, he plans to head for the hills until he falls for Barton's pistol-packin' daughter, Patience (Suzanne Pleshette). But when the real Swifty shows up looking for blood, Smith comes up with an outrageous scheme to save his hide, stop the mining feud and win over Patience and it might just work if it doesn't blow up the entire town!

Burt Kennedy's "Support Your Local Gunfighter" (1971) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber. The supplemental features on the disc include an original trailer for the film, deleted scenes, and exclusive new audio commentary by filmmaker/historian Michael Schlesinger. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-A "locked".
Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Support Your Local Gunfighter arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber.
The release is sourced from an older master that was supplied by MGM. (It is the same master that a couple of years ago Twilight Time used to produce this double-feature release). It terms overall quality, this master is actually slightly better than the one that was used for Support Your Local Sheriff. There are still areas where it is easy to see that depth and clarity can be improved, but their consistency is better. However, this film also has more darker footage and this is usually where the age of the master shows because grain does not appear as nicely exposed and resolved as it should be. Often times it becomes borderline noisy, which is why some of the light crashing occasionally looks exacerbated. Colors are stable, but the primaries and the supporting nuances can be more convincing (see screencaptures #4 and 5). There are no traces of sharpening adjustments. Image stability is very good. My score is 3.75/5.00. (Note: This is a Region-A "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-A or Region-Free player in order to access its content).
There is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
There are no technical anomalies to report. When MGM prepared the current master the audio was also remixed, so the dynamic balance, clarity, and depth are all with native characteristics. Can a new remix offer any meaningful improvements? I don't think so. Some cosmetic improvements are perhaps possible, but I think that the basics are solid here.
Kino Lorber's new release of Support Your Local Gunfighter is sourced from the same master that MGM supplied to Twilight Time for the first release of the film, which also included Support Your Local Sheriff. If remastered Support Your Gunfighter will look better on Blu-ray, but the current master is free of digital anomalies and I think that it has pretty decent organic qualities. RECOMMENDED.
