Super Storm Blu-ray Movie Review

Bozos and Bosons.

In Super Storm, a collection of detention-bound students must race against time to save the world from a destruction of their own making. Science genius Megan (Luisa D'Oliveira) and her partner Will (Brett Dier) have made a major scientific breakthrough in their school project, and it's attracting some of the nation's most brilliant scientific minds. It's also attracting so-called "destruction particles" that have wiped out Jupiter's famous "red spot" and are now wrecking havoc on Earth. With time running out, Megan, Will, their fellow detained students, and a few adults must use their scientific knowledge to stop a calamity from destroying the planet.

Doom.

More of the same. Super Storm serves up the same old song-and-dance, including scientific mumbo jumbo meant to advance a plot of destruction, seen here on a small budget small scale, complete with the usual array of fuzzy, but basically competent, visual effects. It's a rather dull picture, one with a snail's pace, bland characters, and not even enough energy to power a toaster, let alone fry the world. Even hardcore fans of Disaster cheese may pressed to admit that Super Storm fizzles more often than it sizzles.

Super Storm Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Super Storm features a reasonably strong high definition transfer. Though it can be a bit noisy in spots and not always super-sharp, it delivers clean, accurate details and mostly lively colors. Image clarity and the HD resolution do as much as they can to bring out facial textures and general in-frame information, such as small details inside the school, on scientific equipment, and the like. Colors never explode off the screen but offer fair balance and accuracy. Black levels and flesh tones satisfy.

Super Storm Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

Super Storm's Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack swirls around the stage with honest power and heft. There is a nice combination of light background nuance and heavy foreground action. The latter is particularly invigorating and dominates the presentation as mostly well-defined bass powers through the stage in support of a number of lightning/electrical sound effects. It's big and boomy and nicely spaced, too, creating a fairly rich listen for a low-end film. Dialogue plays evenly from the center, never offering cause for concern.

Super Storm Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Super Storm is just another in a long-line of barely serviceable low-end Disaster movies. These things are made so frequently and similarly that it's often difficult to tell them apart beyond the name, the faces, and the disaster's origins. Maybe next time the filmmakers will shake things up and allow the disaster to win. Anchor Bay's featureless Blu-ray release of Super Storm yields adequate video and audio. Skip it.
