Overview

Subway 4K (1985)

Subway is Luc Besson's (The Fifth Element, The Professional) ultra cool and stylized romantic caper starring Christopher Lambert (Highlander, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes) and Isabelle Adjani (Queen Margot, Diabolique). Lambert plays a hipster thief who falls in love with the bored and beautiful wife of the millionaire he just robbed. She wants her stolen papers back, and he wants her heart. With gangsters and Metro police on their tail, the two seek refuge in the wild labyrinth beneath the subway, and team up with the strange characters, including Jean Reno (Mission: Impossible, Godzilla), who inhabit this subterranean world. The result is a hilarious, rocking adventure that never slows down.

Subway 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

"The drummer never divulges his name."

Reviewed by Kenneth Brown November 24, 2025

Just in time for holiday shopping and potentially ideal for those French alt-genre film-fans in your family or friend group comes the Luc Besson 9-Film Collection from Sony, which offers six of the controversial filmmaker's movies on 4K UltraHD with Dolby Atmos tracks and three additional flicks on standard Blu-ray with DTS-HD Master Audio. Besson has a messy, I'll just call it "icky" personal past (a word that feels generous), but for those who can separate art from an artist's alleged and/or admitted misdeeds, this box set makes for a solid albeit flawed gift. The films included in the collection are black-and-white post-apocalyptic drama Le Dernier Combat (The Last Battle, 1983), stylized crime dramedy Subway (1985), theatrical and director's cuts of off-kilter romance The Big Blue (1998), proto-Wick assassin thriller Le Femme Nikita (1990), underwater documentary Atlantis (1991), theatrical and extended versions of the beloved, fan-favorite Leon: The Professional (1994), zany '90s sci-fi epic The Fifth Element (1997), domestic and international cuts of underrated historical biopic The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), and visually striking supernatural noir Angela-A (2005).

"How can I keep on smiling at their disguise? When I know nothing good ever comes from lies. My heart is no beginner. But still, I can lose my temper. Yeah. How can we keep on watching that f***in' TV? We're so bored, we don't even care what we see. Takes our strength away. And never, never shows us the way. No! But I think I know the answer. It's only mystery and I like it!"

Fred (Christopher Lambert), a thief who makes ends meet in the Metro, has stolen some important documents from Helena (Isabelle Adjani), a beautiful young woman married to a rich but exceptionally obnoxious businessman (Constantin Alexandrov). Hoping to finally get rich and walk away from his risky profession, Fred instructs Helena to meet him in the Metro, where he will give her back the documents in exchange for a substantial sum of money. However, when Helena arrives at the meeting spot, Fred runs away because another of his victims, accompanied by his goons, unexpectedly appears. While hiding in the Metro, Fred befriends several strange characters (Jean-Hugues Anglade, Richard Bohringer, Jean Reno and Christian Gomba). He also meets Batman (Jean-Pierre Bacri) and Robin (Jean-Claude Lecas), two crazy cops on a mission to nab the Anglade's thief, "Roller Skater".

Adding, "it enthusiastically plays with rich colors, bright lights and various types of shadows, producing exasperating chaos but also beauty that is impossible not to admire. Also, different parts of it pulsate with a rhythm of their own, making it difficult to profile as a romantic story, drama or action film.

Subway 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

  • The Making of Subway (HD, 80 minutes) - This surprisingly lengthy, fully comprehensive behind-the-scenes documentary delves into the film, Besson's vision, style and execution, the approach the actors took to tackling their characters, the inspiration for the world and denizens of Subway, and much more. Directed by actor Jean-Hughes Anglade, this doc is presented in French with optional subtitles.
  • Actor Jean-Hugues Anglade (HD, 18 minutes) - An interview with Anglade that's especially interesting when it touches on the comradery with the rest of the cast and the work he did with Besson to develop his character.
  • Assistant Director Didier Grousset (HD, 20 minutes) - Another excellent one-on-one sitdown, this time with AD Didier Grousset, who goes into detail outlining the evolution of the project from its earliest stages to final form.
  • Co-writer/Editor Sophie Schmit (HD, 31 minutes) - In the longest of the interviews, screenwriter/editor Sophie Schmit digs into the writing process, discussing everything from character arcs to act structure to climactic endings.
  • Production Assistant Didier Naert (HD, 29 minutes) - How often do you hear from a PA? Particularly when they're given so much time to expound upon their memories and experience? Naert shares a unique perspective on the film and its just as engaging as the others.
  • Composer Michel Jonasz (HD, 17 minutes) - Jonasz talks about Arthur Simms, the singer of "It's Only Mystery."
  • Theatrical Trailer (HD, 2 minutes)

Subway 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Subway is a wild little flick with indie flair, and Besson's penchant for eclectic action characters is out in full force. Sony's 4K UltraHD edition is outstanding too, with a stunning restoration and 2160p video presentation, excellent lossless audio tracks and a hefty package of extras.
