Everything changed for Troma Entertainment in 1984, with the release of “The Toxic Avenger” providing the company with a hit they could call their own, leading the way to a new direction in low-budget exploitation moviemaking, featuring strange monsters, gross-out comedy, and a whole lot of noise. Before Toxie, there was Troma Entertainment, creators of “sexy comedies,” trying to make a small fortune with nudity-laden endeavors that cranked up wackiness to best attract ticket-buyers. 1982’s “Stuck on You” at least makes some effort to be about something more than a random assortment of jokes, taking on the world of palimony suits, recalling the decline of a relationship that was seemingly doomed from the start, with co- directors Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz laboring to blend legal world woes with a time-traveling tale. And there’s plenty of time devoted to Troma’s love of the absurd.
The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation struggles with Troma's poor encoding, keeping grain blocky throughout the viewing experience. Detail is soft with skin surfaces and gross-out visuals, and costuming isn't fibrous. Colors provide some punch, with period outfits and strong makeup application supplying brighter primaries. Source shows signs of wear and tear at times, exposing a few significant points of damage along the way.
The 2.0 Dolby Digital mix secures a basic understanding of dialogue exchanges, handling the feature's love of yelling matches reasonably well, without much fuzziness. Soundtrack selections aren't powerful, delivering mild support at times, with decent instrumentation.
Listed on the back cover are "Adhesive Interviews with Troma's Alumni" and "Pin Up Photo Gallery," but these supplements aren't included on the disc.
As with most Troma endeavors, "Stuck on You" is all over the place, with farcical intentions slipping into pure chaos one too many times. Randomness doesn't fit here, as the story seems perfectly open for a comedic inspection of relationship realities, watching as Bill and Carol really get a good, long look at the challenges of a long-term relationship. Focus isn't a Kaufman/Herz specialty, leaving the bulk of "Stuck on You" to weird gags (including a lengthy study of tight jeans) and traditional Troma nonsense.
