Stargirl: Season 2 continues the exciting adventures of Stargirl and her super-heroic friends. The series works as a compelling comic-book drama. Exploring the tales of the Justice Society of America, Stargirl continues to offer a blend of compelling action and mystery to fans of the television series. The comic-book saga was developed and created by Geoff Johns (Young Justice, The Flash) as based on his own comics. Starring Brec Bassinger, Amy Smart, and Luke Wilson, Stargirl: Season 2 provides more thrilling moments for DC fans.
As the super-heroic Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) continues to expand her skill set and embrace her destiny as a superhero girl, the bustling Justice Society of America is led by young heroes who are facing brand new challenges around every corner of their community. Following the successful path that the group has been on; the ISA was overcome. Yet Stargirl is also Courtney Whitmore – aka, she must remember to balance her personal life with her super heroic duties.
Struggling to do well in school (and even failing in her classes), Stargirl might be rockin’ it as the hero everyone needs after school hours but can she also survive her ordinary day-to-day life? The same can also be said for the other heroes: Yolanda (Wildcat) struggles with the death of Brainwave, Beth (Dr. Mid-Nite) has a new discovery, and Rick is on a mission as he searches for someone. Even as new challenges rise, the Justice Society of America won’t just sit back. The team is determined to work together to fight for tomorrow! The villains must be stopped – including the Shade, a most diabolical opponent.
The series does a wonderful job of exploring the characters. One of the things that is most special about the production is how the superhero team is given a chance in the spotlight – these characters face the struggles of any youth of today with school, family, and commitments. The drama explores these quiet elements that are ordinary alongside the extraordinary. This is one of the reasons Stargirl is such an impressive production. Along the way, the characters struggle with their fears and must learn to overcome them.
Stargirl was a blast of fresh air when it debuted on television during the COVID era and it is nice to see the production continue on in a post-COVID state-of-emergency. The production is well done in most respects and far better than expected. Take, for example, the excellent production merits with production design by Fred Andrews and Eddie Matazzoni. The efforts are extortionary and give the series some extra charm. There are plenty of nostalgic elements to the series (as a Blu-ray devotee, the “blue” fridge in the kitchen brings a smile to my face). Tiny elements like this make the series all the more compelling.
The aspect ratio is another fun element of the series – the production looks far more cinematic than most television series with a wider ratio. The production team did a solid job with this aspect of the series and the results help the cinematography to shine. The series has a bold aesthetic and there certainly are a number of impressive elements – from the environment of the Justice Society to the school. No matter, the aspect ratio impresses.
Featuring an original score composed by Pinar Toprak (Captain Marvel), Stargirl has entertaining music and this is one of the most enjoyable elements of the series. The music is far more fun in comparison to most television productions. With such a quality composer behind-the-scenes, the production is livelier and more adventurous.
Stargirl creator Geoff Johns did a great job bringing the series to life. DC fans should enjoy the imaginative production – it has a fun cast of characters and there is a lot to enjoy about their dynamics together. The comic-book style is great and doesn’t disappoint. The action scenes are energetic and provide plenty of thrills. Stargirl is an incredible achievement for DC television.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Warner Bros., Stargirl is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 2.20:1 widescreen. The high-definition presentation on the release is excellent with great color reproduction. The video quality looks great: outstanding detail and plenty of crisp visuals. The series is razor-sharp looking and the cinematography is well preserved by the encoding. The use of a unique aspect ratio on Stargirl is one of the most fun elements of the presentation and is something that was thankfully carried over to the home media release.
The release is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. The lossless, high resolution audio encoding sounds exceptionally crisp and clear. Dialogue is easy to understand. The original score is beautifully reproduced and makes a wonderful impression. The track has a lot of fun energy and the surrounds are actively used to expand the soundstage. For a television production, the surrounds have more energy and vitality than some might expect and it makes the experience feel a lot more cinematic.
The one area of the Stargirl: Season 2 set that could use some improvement in the supplemental package. The release could have benefited from some more in-depth behind-the-scenes footage or audio commentaries. Unfortunately, the supplemental package is slim comparatively and could have benefited from additional content. Nonetheless, it is nice to see some bonus content providing a little bit of extra value to the Stargirl: Season 2 package.

Stargirl: Season 2 is an exceptionally fun and charming television series. The entire cast is great and the actors are perfect in their respective roles. The production merits are worthwhile with superb visuals: the cinematography alone is top-notch. DC comic book fans will be thrilled to explore this creative television production. The series has a nice comic book style and it feels nostalgic and fun. A great combination. The Blu-ray release features a quality video and audio presentation alongside a selection of extras. Fans looking for a nice set will be pleased. Highly recommended.
