Stargate: The Movie Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman February 10, 2021

Lionsgate has released a SteelBook packaging variant for the 1994 Sci-Fi film 'Stargate.' The disc and digital content is (essentially) identical to that found in the 2009 wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Stargate: The Movie Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

Lionsgate's SteelBook is glossy and smooth on the outside and will show handling fingerprints, primarily in the predominantly darker areas on the front. The front image depicts a sandy terrain, bottom, with four figures -- Jackson and O'Neill and a couple of the other soldiers -- gazing at the pyramid off in the distance. The pyramid is the focal point, or perhaps better said the focal point is the star-shaped light burst atop it which reaches horizontally and vertically pointing up towards the film's title, top, in gray lettering. Actor names Kurt Russell and James Spader appear above in white. There's a dark night sky behind the pyramid with three moons and some stars scattered around the image. A black Blu-ray disc logo appears bottom right. The rear panel features an image of the gate center inside of which is a scene very similar to the one on the front (the four men are even posed identically) but with the pyramid appearing closer, a moon peeking from behind it, the alien craft in the sky, and a lighter sky color above. The area outside the gate is a typical outer space background, black with planets and stars around. The spine is a black color with the film's title in gray, center.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The lone Blu-ray disc sits on a central hub on the right. A now expired UV digital copy code is tucked under the left-hand side tabs. The inner print is a nothing but a reflective silver color.

Note that I do not own any previous Blu-ray release for the film, but this appears to include the same video, audio, and supplements from the 2009 release, though the menu seems to have been slightly reworked based on a screenshot from a previous release. Stargate: The Movie Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Perhaps 2021 will finally see Stargate make the jump to the UHD format (perhaps, too, with a new SteelBook?) but in the meantime this BD looks and sounds fairly good and the SteelBook is very attractive. Highly recommended.
